Some answers to common questions about registering domains through Squarespace.
Getting started FAQs
Can I register a domain with Squarespace?
Yes. If your site is on a trial or a paid plan, you can purchase domains through Squarespace. If you're on an annual billing cycle, you can register one domain for free.
Can I transfer a domain to Squarespace?
How much does it cost?
All Squarespace sites on an annual billing cycle include one custom domain, free for its first year (only for select TLDs). Additional domains are $20 to $70 per year.
Pricing is based on the TLD. For example, common TLDs like .com and .org are $20 per year, and other TLDs like .photography .media are $30 and $50 per year.
How do I get a free domain?
All Squarespace sites on an annual billing cycle include one custom domain, free for its first year. To get started, visit Free Squarespace Domain offer.
Can I get more domains after getting my free domain?
Yes. If you already claimed your one free domain, you can register more domains for $20 to $70 per year.
Can I get a domain if I’m on a monthly plan?
Yes. If you’re on a monthly billing cycle, you can now register domains for $20 to $70 per year.
What TLDs are available?
You can choose from 200+ TLDs, including the most common options:
How many domains can I buy?
You can register one free domain if you're on an annual billing cycle. You can register as many other domains as you want for $20 to $70 each.
For example, if you're a business, you may want to buy multiple variations of your domain, like yourdomain.com, yourdomain.net, or yourdomain.biz.
How do I get email for my domain?
You can get a custom email address to use with one Squarespace Domain through our partnership with G Suite by Google.
Will I have domain or Whois privacy?
Yes. Domain privacy is included for free with all domains registered through Squarespace. To learn more, visit Domains and Whois privacy.
The domain I want isn't available
If the domain isn't available, there are a few reasons why this might happen. The domain you entered could already be taken, it could be a premium domain, or it might contain too many characters. You can learn about our domain name restrictions in the Limitations section of our Squarespace Domains guide.
Why should I register multiple domains?
Registering multiple domains provides visitors with more ways to find you, captures common misspellings, and keeps competitors from registering similar domain names. At just $20 to $70 per year, each additional domain name can improve your online presence at a low cost.
Domain management FAQs
Can I start again or rename a domain?
Your domain name is important to your online presence, so we offer a five-day grace period where you can change it before it becomes permanent. This allows you some time if you change your mind or made any typos when entering it.
After this five-day grace period, the domain can't be changed. To learn more, visit Changing a Squarespace Domain name.
Can I remove the "www" from my domain?
Yes. You can remove the "www" from your domain.
You can only remove the "www" from a Squarespace Domain you already registered, and it must be set as your primary domain.
Unless you're absolutely sure that you want to only display your naked domain, this isn't always necessary. Without changing any settings, visitors can find your site with or without typing "www" before it. If they type "yourdomain.com," they'll be taken to your domain, and the "www.yourdomain.com" will appear. This is a fairly standard practice across the internet.
How long can I keep my domain?
Once you register a domain, you own it and can keep it as long as you'd like. As long as you maintain your service with Squarespace, the domain will point to your Squarespace site for the exact length of your plan with us.
Why doesn't my site load when I go to my Squarespace Domain?
If your Squarespace Domain isn’t directing to your site, review the following:
- If you recently registered your domain, ensure that you’ve verified ownership. If you don't verify your domain within 15 days, it will be temporarily suspended and might not direct to your site.
- Ensure that your domain is active and not expired.
- If you’ve changed any Advanced DNS settings, restore the original settings with the Website Defaults preset. Allow up to 72 hours for your settings to readjust.
If you’re still having trouble, contact us, and we’ll help you troubleshoot further.
Moving domains FAQs
Can I move my domain between Squarespace sites?
Yes. If you registered a domain through Squarespace and want to use it with a different Squarespace site, you can move it from your Domains panel. For the step-by-step process and best practices, visit Moving a domain between sites.
Can I connect my Squarespace Domain to another provider?
Yes, this is possible. However, if you're moving your site to a different provider, we recommend transferring your domain to them instead.
If you want to keep your domain registered with Squarespace and connect it to a third-party provider, open the domain's DNS settings.
Can I transfer my Squarespace Domain to another provider?
Yes. You can transfer your Squarespace domain by first unlocking it from your site. To learn more, visit Transferring a Squarespace Domain.
If you want to close your Squarespace site entirely, you'll need to cancel service separately.
Is renewal automatic?
By default, all Squarespace Domains are set to auto-renew, and you can see the renewal date for the domain in the Domains panel. You'll receive an email 15 days before the renewal date letting you know you'll soon be charged for your domain subscription.
If you don't want your domain to renew automatically, you can disable auto-renew in the Domains panel. If you disable auto-renew and let your domain expire, someone else can register it and use it for their site. Even if you're not using your domain or site now, you may want to hold onto your domain for later.
What happens if my renewal fails?
If we can't charge the credit card on file for your site, your domain will remain active and past-due for 15 days. We'll make additional attempts to charge your card every five days after the initial failed charge. After the third attempt, 15 days after the payment was due, the domain will no longer resolve to your site. We highly recommend that you keep an active, valid credit card on file to ensure uninterrupted service.
After 15 days, you'll have a 30-day grace period in which you can reactivate your domain from your Domains panel. After 30 days (45 days total after the renewal date), the domain will be released.
What happens to my free domain if I downgrade to monthly billing?
If you switch from annual to monthly billing, your domain will expire at what would be the end of your annual billing cycle. You'll receive an email notification 30 days before the expiration date.
If I upgrade from a monthly to annual billing cycle, can I get a refund for a domain I bought?
We can’t convert a domain you already bought to a free domain. However, you can take advantage of this benefit by registering another domain for free. For example, you may want to register a .net version of your domain.
What happens to my domain if I delete my Squarespace site?
If you delete your Squarespace site, you'll have the option to either let your domain expire or renew it for an annual fee. If you renew, you'll continue to manage the domain through Squarespace.
If you're moving your site to a different provider, we'd be sad to see you go, but you may want to transfer your domain to the new provider so it works with your new site.
To review all of these options, visit What to do with your domain if you leave Squarespace.
Can I get a refund for a domain?
You can cancel your domain and receive a refund within five days of registration. We don't offer refunds after this five-day grace period.
Your primary domain can't be removed. If the domain you want to remove is your primary domain, first set a different primary domain.
To cancel your domain and receive a refund:
- In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Domains.
- Under Squarespace Domains, click the domain to remove.
- Click Cancel Domain, and then click Confirm. This can't be undone.
Do I have to pay to renew my one free domain?
All free domains registered as of March 5, 2015 will be free for the first year of service. After one year of service, the domain will renew for $20. We'll charge the credit card connected to your site.
If you registered a free domain prior to March 5, 2015, your domain will continue to renew for free every year that your site remains active.
What happens if my site expires?
If your site expires while your Squarespace Domain is still active, your site will convert to a parking page. You can continue to manage your domain from your parking page, convert it back to a paid site, or move your domain to another site on your account.
If you're cancelling your site, review your domain options before cancelling service.
