Squarespace domain renewals

Information about the renewal billing cycle of Squarespace-managed domains.

Last updated February 5, 2025

When you register a domain with Squarespace, it's set to renew automatically to keep your site running smoothly.

If we can't charge your payment method, your domain expires and disconnects from your site, and any email services associated with your domain (such as Google Workspace, Outlook, Zoho, etc.) will be disrupted. After your domain expires, you'll enter a grace period for more time to reactivate your domain.

Note

If your domain expires, it's important to reactivate it before its renewal grace period ends. After that, you could permanently lose access to your domain if someone else purchases it. To ensure you retain access to your domain, keep its billing information up to date, and if the domain expires, reactivate it before its grace period ends.

Before you begin

  • If you purchased a domain from a third-party provider (like BlueHost, HostGator, or GoDaddy) and connected the domain to your site, your domain provider manages the billing for your domain.
  • Your domain’s billing and renewal is separate from any other Squarespace subscriptions you may have, like a website, Email Campaigns, Google Workspace, or Member Sites.
  • If you're canceling your site and want to maintain ownership of your domain, visit What to do with your domain if you cancel your website.
  • If your domain isn't currently suspended or expired, and you'd like to add years to the registration, visit Adding years to your domain registration.

Squarespace domains auto-renew by default

By default, all Squarespace-managed domains are set to renew automatically to keep your site running smoothly. You’ll receive an email 30 days before the start of each renewal term reminding you that your domain will automatically renew if you don’t take any action. 15 days before the start of each renewal term, we'll charge the payment method on file for another term. We’ll then continue to automatically renew your domain based on the registration term you chose. You can also extend your registration term length.

If your domain has auto-renew turned on and we successfully collect your renewal payment, your domain will renew.

Disable auto-renew

Squarespace domains are set to auto-renew by default, but you can disable auto-renew by opening your domains dashboard, clicking your domain, then switching the Auto-renew toggle off.

Tip

To review the renewal price after turning off auto-renew, hover over the question mark icon next to Expires on.

To cancel the upcoming renewal, ensure you disable auto-renew at least one day before the Renews on date.

If auto-renewal is turned off, you’ll receive an email 30 days before the expiration date, 5 days before the expiration date, and on the day your domain expires, reminding you that your domain will expire if you don't take action. To re-enable auto-renew, switch the Renew automatically toggle on.

Note

Free legacy domains don’t have an Auto-renew checkbox, as they renew automatically every year that the site remains active on an annual billing plan.

Domain renewal timeline

To prevent service interruptions, we charge you 15 days before your domain's official renewal date. The day we charge you for your domain is your domain's charge date.

Fifteen days before your charge date, we'll send an email to the Owner and Admin domain contacts about the upcoming domain renewal. This is a great time to check if your payment information is up to date or to disable auto-renew if you plan to cancel the renewal. If the card on file is correct, no more action is necessary to proceed with the renewal.

Find your domain's charge date and price

To confirm your domain’s charge date:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Look at the Expiration column next to your domain.
  3. Your charge date is 15 days before the listed expiration date.

To confirm your domain's renewal price:

  1. Open your domains dashboard
  2.  Click your domain to open its details page.
  3. The renewal price is listed next to the renewal date.

Domains become past due if auto-renew is disabled or a payment fails

Domains typically expire when you disable auto-renew or if there's an issue with the payment method on file. If we can't charge the payment method on file for your site, your domain enters a "past due" status, but remains active for 15 days past the charge date.

We'll make additional attempts to charge your card every five days after the initial failed charge. After the third attempt, 15 days after the payment was due, the domain will officially expire and no longer connect to your site. After your domain expires, you'll enter a grace period, giving you more time to renew your domain. To learn more about grace periods, visit Reactivating an expired Squarespace domain.

Note

Depending on its registrar, your domain's expiration, renewal, and grace periods may differ from what we list in this example. ccTLDs follow different rules than other TLDs. To learn more about the life cycle of your ccTLD, visit ccTLD basics.

Update payment information

To learn how to update the billing information on your domain, visit Updating your billing information.

Grouped domains share billing information

If you have more than one Squarespace domain, the billing information for your domains may be grouped, meaning the payment information is linked. If you update the payment method information on one domain, it'll update the payment method for all grouped domains. To separate the billing information of a domain from the other domains in that group, you can ungroup your domain.

Update payment information for domains purchased through a third party

If you purchased your Squarespace domain through a reseller, like Google Workspace or another reseller of Squarespace domains, you'll need to manage your domain's billing information through the account you have with the reseller. Adding payment information to the Billing panel of your domain won't update the payment information for your resold domain. If you're not sure if you have a resold domain, open your domains dashboard and click your domain to open its details page. If you have a resold domain, the reseller's name appears under the domain's expiration date.

How free domains renew

Eligible Squarespace sites on an annual billing plan include one free custom domain.

Renewal after the first year of free domain service

All free domains registered as of March 5, 2015, are free for the first year of service. After the first year, the domain will renew for its listed price, and we'll charge the payment method connected to your site. To find a domain's price, you can search for it on our domain name search page.

Renewal for free legacy domains

If you registered a free domain prior to March 5, 2015 as part of our promotion, you have a free legacy domain. Your domain will continue to renew for free every year that your site remains active and on an annual website billing plan. There are a few situations where your free domain could convert to a paid domain. If the domain converts to a paid domain, you'll need to pay its listed price. To find a domain's price, you can search for it on our domain name search page.

  • If you switch to a monthly website billing plan, you can choose to let your domain expire or convert it to a paid domain. If you choose a paid domain, you’ll be charged your domain's renewal cost when it renews.
  • If your domain expires and you don't renew it before its renewal grace period ends, your domain will lose the free domain promotion. When you reactivate the domain, it'll convert to a paid domain.
  • If you move your domain to a different Squarespace site that already has a free domain registered on it, your domain converts to a paid domain.
  • If you move your domain to a different Squarespace site that uses a currency other than USD to pay for the site, your domain converts to a paid domain.
  • It's not possible to transfer the price or the promotion to another domain.
