Changing your website billing plan

Upgrade or downgrade your website subscription.

Last updated January 22, 2025

You can change your Squarespace website plan and cycle at any time. This guide covers changing your plan and how often you’re billed for service (monthly or annually).

Before you begin

Site owners and contributors with Admin or Billing permissions can make these changes.

  • When you change your plan, you may gain or lose access to specific features. Review Choosing the right Squarespace plan, and our pricing page for a list of each plan’s features before changing plans. To learn more on the timing of when you'll lose or get access, review the upgrading and downgrading sections below.
  • You can change your plan and billing cycle at the same time in the Billing panel. Some plan changes take effect at the end of your current billing period.
  • If your site is past due, update your payment method before changing your plan.
  • Before you can downgrade your plan, you may need to disable or remove specific premium features from your site.

Domain renewal charge and notifications

To prevent service interruptions, we charge you 15 days before your domain's official renewal date. The day we charge you for your domain is your domain's charge date.

Fifteen days before your charge date, we'll send an email to the Owner and Admin domain contacts about upcoming domain renewals. This gives you a chance to update your credit card information or disable auto-renew to cancel the renewal. If the card on file is correct, no further action is necessary to proceed with the renewal.

Change your billing plan or cycle

Note

To use a different card to pay for a new plan, first enter the new card, then follow the steps below.

Squarespace has several website billing plans and two billing cycles you can choose from: monthly and annual. It's not possible to pay for multiple years at a time. To change your website billing plan or cycle:

  1. Open your Account Dashboard, then click the site you want to edit.
  2. Open the Billing panel and click Subscriptions.
  3. Under Subscriptions, click Website, or Squarespace depending on your plan.
  4. Under Subscription Plan, click Upgrade, even if you're trying to downgrade.
  5. Choose a new plan, or keep your current plan. To learn more about each plan, visit Choosing the right Squarespace billing plan.
  6. Choose an annual or monthly billing cycle, or keep your current cycle.
  7. Review your order and click Confirm and purchase.

If you're on a legacy billing plan, and you have trouble changing your plan, visit Legacy website billing plans for next steps.

When upgrades take effect

If you change both your billing plan and cycle, the timing of when you get access to features depends on the plan change you make. You’re charged the prorated difference between your old and new plan. Keep these scenarios in mind when upgrading your plan:

Billing cycle change Plan change takes effect
No change Immediately
Change to monthly

At the end of the current billing cycle

Change to annual Immediately

Cancel your upgrade

If you upgrade your plan and change to monthly at the same time, you won't have access to your new plan's features until the end of your annual billing cycle.

To upgrade immediately, first cancel your upgrade before the end of your current billing cycle:

  1. Open the Billing panel and click Cancel Changes under the "Subscription changes pending" message.
  2. Upgrade your plan again, but without switching to a monthly billing cycle. You'll have immediate access to your new plan's features.
  3. If you still want to switch to monthly, change your billing cycle after upgrading.

When downgrades take effect

When you downgrade your plan, you’ll have access to features until the end of your current billing plan, even if you change your billing cycle. We don’t offer prorated refunds for downgrades. Visit Choosing the right Squarespace plan to learn more about the features of each plan.

Core, Plus, or Advanced to Basic plan

If you're on a Core, Plus, or Advanced plan, and switch to the Basic plan, you'll have access to premium features until the end of your current billing period. Before downgrading to the Basic plan:

You can switch back to a Core, Plus, or Advanced plan at any time to regain full access to these features.

Business or Commerce to Personal plan

If you’re on a Business or Commerce website plan and switch to the Personal website plan, you’ll have access to premium features until the end of your current billing period. Before downgrading to the Personal plan:

You can switch back to a Business, Commerce Basic, or Commerce Advanced plan at any time to regain full access to these features.

PayPal

If you use PayPal as a payment processor and downgrade to a plan that charges transaction fees, you may need to reset your PayPal connection to continue offering it at checkout.

When billing cycle changes take effect

Your plan features don’t change when you only change your billing cycle. If you only change your billing cycle, your renewal date moves depending on the cycle you choose.

Billing cycle change Cycle change takes effect
Change to monthly At the end of current billing cycle
Change to annual Immediately

Review your renewal status

When you change your billing plan or cycle, your subscription will be set to renew automatically. If you don’t want your subscription to renew, uncheck Auto-renew every time you change your plan.

To review your site's renewal status:

  1. Open the Billing panel.
  2. Under Subscriptions, click Website or Store, depending on your plan.
  3. Your next renewal/billing date is listed beside Payment due.
  4. At the bottom of the panel, switch the Renew automatically toggle off.

Change your billing date

To change your site's billing date without changing your billing cycle, you can disable auto-renew and reactivate the site on the day you'd like to be charged.

Keep in mind that turning off auto-renew will cause your site to expire on the Payment due date, which means that your site will be taken offline until you reactivate it.

Note

Before allowing your site to temporarily expire, review our cancellation reminders.

What happens to your Squarespace Domain

For Squarespace domains you purchased

If you purchased a Squarespace Domain and switched from annual to monthly, the domain will stay on its own annual billing cycle. You can review your domain's charge date in the Domains panel.

For your free Squarespace Domain

If you registered a legacy Squarespace Domain and switch to monthly billing, check Renew my domain to keep the domain registered. It'll convert to a paid domain, renewing for $20 annually. After you renew the domain, it can't be made free again.

If you don't want to keep the domain, leave Renew my domain unchecked when you switch to monthly billing. The domain will expire at the end of its current billing cycle.
