Domains basics

Resources to help you connect and manage your domain with Squarespace.

Last updated December 17, 2024

A domain name is the URL or web address where visitors find your site. With a Squarespace site, you can replace your built-in Squarespace domain (yourdomain.squarespace.com) with a custom domain. Custom domains give your site a professional look, strengthen your brand, and make it less of a hassle for visitors to find you. Manage, transfer, and connect your domains in your domains dashboard.

Hosting

Web hosting and domain hosting, though closely related, are two different services. To learn about the differences, visit Web hosting vs. domain hosting. Domains hosted by Squarespace include 24/7 domain security monitoring to improve your site’s security.

Register domains through Squarespace

Registering domains through Squarespace is the fastest way to get new custom domains for your site. Having a Squarespace-managed domain also ensures your domain automatically has a secure connection at no added cost. Squarespace offers free subdomains, which can help you manage a large-scale project separately from your site’s main content. For example, subdomains are helpful if your business is running multiple recurring campaigns that each need their own landing page.

Using a domain you already own

If you purchased a custom domain from a third-party provider, you can either transfer it to Squarespace or connect it. In most cases, we recommend transferring, which helps you manage all aspects of your site in one place.

Transfer a domain to Squarespace

If you purchased a domain elsewhere (like GoDaddy, 1&1, or Hover) you can transfer it to Squarespace. When you transfer a domain, you can manage both your domain and website through Squarespace. When you transfer your domain to Squarespace, you automatically receive a free SSL certificate and 24/7 domain monitoring, to protect your domain from hackers.

Visit our guide on transferring domains to learn how to prepare your domain with your current provider and move it to Squarespace.

Connect a domain to Squarespace

If you purchased a domain elsewhere, and can’t transfer it to Squarespace, you can connect it to your Squarespace site. Connecting a domain to your Squarespace site keeps your domain with your current host while pointing it to your Squarespace site.

Note

To help keep personal contact information safe, all eligible Squarespace-managed domains receive automatic Whois privacy protection for free. Not all domain providers offer free Whois privacy protection, so if you choose to connect your domain to Squarespace, contact your domain provider to find out if Whois privacy protection is included.

Available TLDs

A TLD is the last part of a domain name after the ".", like .com or .pizza. We offer transparent, competitive pricing for some of the most popular TLDs. You can choose from 200+ TLDs.

Available ccTLDs

Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) follow different rules than most other TLDs we offer. The list below shows which ccTLDs are available for purchase through Squarespace and where you can find the specific requirements and features for each ccTLD.

If you're interested in a ccTLD that isn't included in the list, you can register one with a third-party provider and connect it to your Squarespace site instead.
