Adding products to your store

Add products to a Products Page to create a Squarespace Commerce store.

There are four different product types in Squarespace:

You can sell physical and service products as one-time purchases or subscriptions.

Note: Ensure your products comply with Section 10.2 of our Terms of Service. If you're accepting payments with Stripe or PayPal, ensure your products meet PayPal's Acceptable Use guidelines and don't appear on Stripe's list of prohibited businesses.
Commerce is a Premium feature available in Business and Commerce plans.

How Squarespace organizes products

Generally, products in Squarespace stores are organized in two parts: Products Pages and then product item pages.

Products Pages

Products Pages are browsable collections of products. The page includes key details about each product, usually the title, price, and if it's sold out. Clicking on a specific product opens its item page for additional details.

You can have multiple Product Pages on your site. All stores have Products Pages, and their designs and style tweaks vary by template.

Tip: Certain templates include Product Quick View to display additional details without leaving the Products Page.

Product item pages

Every product in a Products Page has its own item page with details about it, including additional images, variant drop-down menus, and an Add to Cart button. Product item pages are sub-pages of a Products Page.

Note: Gift cards display a Purchase button that leads directly to checkout instead of an Add to Cart button.

Step 1 - Add a Products Page

To add a Products Page:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click the + icon, then select Products from the page menu.
  3. Add a page title, then press Enter.

You can also click the the gear icon that appears when you hover over the page title to configure your page's settings.

Step 2 - Add a product

After adding at least one Products Page, you can start adding products. There are two ways to add products: directly to a Products Page or in the Inventory panel.

Note: A Products Page can contain up to 200 products.

To add a product to a Products Page directly:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click a Products Page, then click the + icon.

To add a product in the Inventory panel:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Commerce, then click Inventory.
  2. Click the Add Product button.
  3. Select the Products Page on your site where your product will be added.

Step 3 - Select the product type

Select a Product type from the Select Product Type window. It isn't possible to switch product types after creating a product.

Physical Merchandise, apparel, and any other physical goods that you ship or deliver to customers. You can offer a physical product as a one-time purchase, or a subscription. If you sell physical products, you'll need to add at least one shipping option to your store.
Digital Ebooks, audio files, and any other digital downloads you sell. When a customer purchases a digital product, they're sent a download link that's active for 24 hours after the link is first clicked.
Service Classes, consultations, events, or any other service you offer. As opposed to physical goods, service products aren't shipped to customers, so they don't require shipping methods or a shipping address at checkout. You can offer a service product as a one-time purchase, or a subscription.
Gift Card Gift cards are unique digital codes that recipients can use as payment in your online store.

Step 4 - Edit the product information

From the Item tab, use the NameImage, and Description fields to add information for your product.

Note: Product names must be 200 characters or fewer.

Add a name, image, and description to your product in the Item tab.

Click the Upload images arrow in the image field or drag and drop images from a folder on your computer to add images for the product.

You can add up to 250 images for each product. We recommend keeping the combined size of all images for each product under 5 MB.

Multiple images display as thumbnails on the product item view. To learn more, visit Product images.

Tip: You can hover over an image and click the gear icon to add alt text.

Step 5 - Add tags and categories

Click the Tags or Categories link to organize your products with tags and categories.

After adding categories to products, the categories create automatic navigation on your Products Pages. The style of this navigation varies by template. To learn more, visit Organizing products.

Note: Categories must be 25 characters or fewer. Tags must be 80 characters or fewer.

Add tags and categories in the Item tab.

Step 6 - Edit pricing, variants, and upload digital products

Physical & service products

Select Pricing & Variants to define attributes for your product.

You can define each of the following options.

SKU This is the inventory identifier for your product. Squarespace creates one automatically, but you can change it to a SKU that matches your inventory format. SKUs have a 20 character limit. A single product can have up to 100 SKUs.
Pricing Set the price customers will pay for the product with an additional field for sale pricing.
Stock Define the number of units available with an option to set an Unlimited stock value.
Weight Set a weight value in pounds for each item.
Dimensions Set the dimensions in inches for each item.
Note: Services don't have a physical weight or dimension and don't require the Weight and Dimensions fields.

Dimensions affect shipping prices if you use Carrier Calculated Rates via USPS. To learn more, visit Using carrier-calculated rates via USPS.

For Physical and Service products, you can define multiple variants for a product. You can have up to 100 variants for a single product. To learn more, visit Adding product variants.

For Digital products, use the Pricing & Upload tab to set a price and upload your file. To learn more about requirements for digital files, visit Digital products.

Note: The file size limit for digital products is 300 MB.

You can set the price of the product, and set a sale price if you wish to offer one.

  • Price - This defines the normal price for your product.
  • On Sale - Check this box to set the product as On Sale.
  • Sale Price - When you check the On Sale checkbox, the product will be listed with this sale price instead of the normal price.

Step 7 - Create a subscription

If you sell physical or service products and are eligible, you can create a subscription to charge customers on a recurring basis. In the product editor, check Subscription Product and customize the subscription renewal details. To learn more, visit Subscription products.

Step 8 - Save

Click the Save & Publish button to publish the product to your Products Page. This sets the product as available for purchase.

Tip: To schedule the product to publish to your live store later, click Save (not Save & Publish). To learn more, visit Scheduling products.

Style the Products Page

You can customize your Products Page's layout and design in the Site Styles panel. Style tweaks may vary between Products Pages and product item pages.

To open Site Styles, while on a Products Page or product item pages, go back to the Home Menu, click Design, and then click Site Styles.

  • Click any area of the page in the preview to display only the style tweaks available for that area and hide the rest.
  • If you have multiple Products Pages, style changes will apply to all of them to create a consistent look.
  • Your template may support additional features, such as banner images or page headers, that affect how the Products Page looks.

Products Page styles fall into one of three categories, depending on the template:

  • Classic - The original Products Page
  • Advanced - Includes more features like Image Zoom, Quick View, and advanced hover options
  • Unique - Supports template-specific Commerce features

Shopping cart

The shopping cart button shows the number of items in a customer's cart, lets customers view their cart, and leads to the checkout page.

When a customer adds a product to their cart, they'll see the shopping cart button appear. Some templates, like the Brine family, display the shopping cart button when the cart is empty.

If the shopping cart button doesn't appear on your site, ensure Express Checkout is disabled and check that the cart isn't hidden in the Site Styles panel.

You can style the cart in some templates.

Additional options

Beyond the basics, there are additional options so you can customize the products in your store.

Add additional information

Click the Additional Info tab to add more details to the product's page using blocks. To learn more, visit Adding additional information to products.

Create a custom product form

You can create custom forms for customers to complete before they can add a product to their cart. For help with this, visit Creating a custom product form.

Add a thumbnail

The first product image you add is set as the thumbnail image by default. You can click the Options tab to change the thumbnail image. The thumbnail image represents your product in Product Blocks, Summary Blocks, and when you share the product on social media.

Set product URL

The Product URL provides a direct link to the product. The Product URL will match the product name if no custom URL is specified.

Note: The Product URL must be between 3 and 250 characters.

Create a custom button

Products display an Add to Cart button by default. You can change this text in the Options tab by checking Use Custom Add Button Label and entering new text.

If you enable Use Custom Add Button Label and don't enter new text, a blank button will display.

Set as a featured product

Featured Product is a filter used by the Summary Block to highlight specific products. This is useful if you want to display multiple products from different collections in one location. To enable this, in the Options tab, check Featured Product. Then visit Summary Block overview for detailed instructions.

Spread the word about your products by pushing them to social networks. Click the Social tab to set up the social options. Toggling your social services on will automatically push the product to the selected social networks when you publish the product.

Tip: You can add a Share Button to let your customers share your Products on Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, Pinterest, and more. For help with this, visit Adding share buttons.

Duplicate the product

You can duplicate a physical or service product to quickly create and customize a new, similar product. Click Duplicate at the bottom of the Edit Product window to create a copy. To learn more, visit Duplicating products.
