Selling add-on products

Highlight complementary products and encourage customers to add extra items to their order.

Encourage customers to add related or complementary items to their purchase by displaying add-on products. Add-ons are existing products from your store that display as an optional extra purchase when shoppers view another product's details page. For example, ​​if you sell plants, you can sell a ceramic pot as an add-on to the purchase of a houseplant. If you sell art prints, you can sell a frame as an add-on to the purchase of a print.

This is a great way to upsell and increase revenue by helping shoppers find and add relevant products to their orders.

Accessing this feature

Add-on products are available on all 7.1 sites with access to Commerce features.

Before you begin

When selling add-on products, keep in mind:

  • Add-ons are only supported on download, physical, and service products
  • The add-on product must be a download, physical, or service product
  • Each product can display a maximum of four add-on products
  • The add-on product's visibility must be Public 
  • Products with more than one variant option aren't available as add-ons
  • Shoppers can add the add-on product to their carts without adding the main product
  • The add-on product doesn't need to be listed on the same store page as the main product
  • Disabling the store page that lists the add-on product prevents customers from purchasing that add-on product
  • If you delete a product that's set as another product's add-on, we'll automatically remove the add-on

How add-on products display

After setting a product to display as an add-on, the add-on product's featured image, name, and price display beneath the add to cart button on the main product's details page. Clicking + adds the product to the cart.

Selling add-on products

To sell an add-on product with another product:

  1. Create the product you're selling as an add-on. For detailed steps, visit Adding products to your store.
  2. Open the product editor of the product you're adding the add-on to. For detailed steps, visit Editing a product.
  3. Under the Selling Tools section, find Product add-ons.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Select the products to upsell with your main product and click Apply.
  6. Repeat these steps for each product you'd like to add an add-on to.

Styling add-on products

The style of add-on product text follows the product description's settings. The + follows the styles set for the Add to cart button. To learn more about styling your store pages, visit Styling store pages.

Edit or delete an add-on

To remove an add-on product or to change the add-ons that you sell with a product:

  1. Open the product editor of the main product you've added the add-on product to. For detailed steps, visit Editing a product.
  2. Under the Selling Tools section, find Product add-ons.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. To change the products that displays as add-ons, select another product. To remove the add-on product, unselect the product.
  5. Click Apply.
