Duplicating pages and content

Make a copy of pages, sections, blocks, and other content.

Last updated January 23, 2025

Duplicating is a great way to use an existing page, section, block, post, product, event, or video as a starting point for new content. When you duplicate a page or item, the copy will have the same blocks, layout, images, and settings as the original.

To duplicate a full Squarespace site, visit Duplicating a site.

How titles and URL slugs copy

Titles

  • Copies of layout pages, cover pages, and collection items have the same title as the originals with "(Copy)" at the end.
  • To change page titles, open the copy's page settings.
  • When you duplicate a collection item, it immediately opens the copy's settings, where you can change the title and other item content.

URL slugs

  • In version 7.1, copies of layout pages have the same URL slugs as the originals with a number on the end. For example, a copy of /about is /about-1. In version 7.0, copies of layout pages and cover pages include the word "copy." For example, a copy of /about is /about-copy, and a second copy of /about is /about-copy-1.
  • Copies of collection items (such as blog posts, events, and products) use the same URL slug with a sequence of random characters on the end.
  • You can change these URLs anytime.

Duplicate a layout page

To make a copy of a layout page:

  1. Open the Pages panel.
  2. Hover over the layout page you want to duplicate and click the gear icon.
  3. In page settings, scroll down and click Duplicate Page.
  4. Click Confirm in the message that appears.
  5. This opens a copy of the page for editing. The new page title ends with "(Copy)." New gallery block image titles also end with "(Copy)."
  6. The duplicate page will appear in the Not linked section of the pages panel.
  7. You can move the duplicated page to your navigation, edit its content, and change the settings as you would with any other page.

Note

Content added to page-specific headers, intro areas, footers, or sidebars won't appear on the new page.

Duplicate a course page or lesson page

Accessing this feature

Course pages are only supported in version 7.1

You can duplicate a course page by following the steps above for layout pages and selecting a course page in step two. When making a copy of your course page, keep in mind:

  • It's not possible to duplicate course pages that include more than 500 lessons.
  • Duplicated course pages don't initially have pricing plans. You can create a new pricing plan or add it to an existing one.
  • The new page's title is the same as the original, with the addition of "Copy." This name appears as the course name and in the navigation title. To edit the course name and navigation title, visit Editing page titles.

Duplicate a lesson page

You can also duplicate a lesson page within a course:

  1. Open the Pages panel.
  2. Click the course page with the lesson you want to duplicate.
  3. Click Course content.
  4. Hover over the lesson page you want to duplicate and click ....
  5. In the dropdown menu select Duplicate.

Page sections are only supported in version 7.1.

You can duplicate block sections, gallery sections, and auto layouts within a page. It's not possible to duplicate a collection page section.

To duplicate a page section:

All the section's content will be duplicated as is, but newsletter and form blocks will need to have a storage option connected manually.

You can also save a section to store the current version of your section and reuse it elsewhere on your site.

Duplicate a block

Accessing this feature

Duplicating blocks is supported in Fluid Engine sections on version 7.1 sites. It's not possible to duplicate individual blocks in classic editor sections or on version 7.0 sites. Duplicate pages or sections instead.

To duplicate a block:

  1. Open the Pages panel and click the page with the block you want to duplicate.
  2. Click Edit on the page, then click the block so it's highlighted.
  3. Click the duplicate icon in the block's toolbar or press Command + D (on Mac) or Control + D (on Windows). Alternatively, press Command + C or Control + C to copy a block, then Command + V or Control + V to paste it. The duplicated block will appear overlaying the original.

All the block's content will be duplicated as is, but newsletter and form blocks will need to have a storage option connected manually.

Tip

When duplicating text blocks with keyboard shortcuts, ensure your cursor isn't in the text block. Keyboard shortcuts when typing are different than when arranging content. Click the block's border when a hand icon appears to ensure it's highlighted without your cursor in the text.

Duplicate multiple blocks

To duplicate multiple blocks at the same time:

  1. While editing, click and drag in the section background to highlight the blocks you want to duplicate.
  2. Click the duplicate icon or press Command + D (on Mac) or Control + D (on Windows). This duplicates all highlighted blocks in the section.

To highlight and duplicate all blocks in a Fluid Engine section at the same time, press Command + A or Control + A, then click the duplicate icon.

Copy and paste blocks to other Fluid Engine sections

With copy and paste shortcuts, you can duplicate blocks from one Fluid Engine section to another:

  1. While editing, click the block you want to duplicate, or highlight multiple blocks.
  2. Press Command + C (on Mac) or Control + C (on Windows).
  3. Scroll to another Fluid Engine section, or navigate to another page with a Fluid Engine section. If you navigate to another page, click Edit on that page.
  4. Press Command + V (on Mac) or Control + V (on Windows).

Only Fluid Engine sections support copying and pasting blocks. It's not possible to copy from or paste to other types of sections.

Keep in mind, if you copy a block from one section into a section with a different color theme, the pasted block's colors may be different. Blocks always follow their section's color theme.

  • Duplicating a product will duplicate the product featured image, which can display on store pages and social media. If you update the product images after duplicating a product, ensure you also change the product featured image.
  • A duplicated product's URL will contain a random string of characters. You can edit the URL to shorten it.
  • When you duplicate a product, "(Copy)" is added to the end of the image alt text. Edit the image alt text after duplicating the product.
