Suggestions to write effective SEO, page, and navigation titles that will help visitors find your content.

Pages on your site have three titles with different purposes, and they don't need to match exactly:

• SEO title - Displays in browser tabs, search engine results, and social shares.
• Page title - If there's no SEO title, the page title appears in browser tabs and search results. Page titles sometimes display on the page on store pages on version 7.1 and some templates on version 7.0.
• Navigation title - Creates the link name in your site's navigation menu.

Tip: Updating a page title doesn't automatically update the URL slug.

Best practices

• Titles are a great place to add your target keywords.
• For best results, keep the length to 70 characters or fewer and give each page a unique title.
• You can customize how titles display in browser tabs and in search results.
• Avoid using angle brackets around your text in the navigation title or page title, like <Page title>. Angle brackets used this way render as code and may make parts of your title invisible or cause other issues.

Add an SEO title

SEO titles appear in browser tabs, search engine results, and social shares. Clear, informative page titles like "About South St. Cafe," "Book a Vinyasa Yoga Consultation," and "Sculptor Jane Cabbott" provide more information to search engines, helping visitors understand the page's purpose.

• SEO titles aren't available for homepages. If you added one before making a page the homepage, it may appear in the browser bar.
• SEO titles have a 100-character limit.
• You can change the format of how your SEO title displays in browser bars.
• If there's no SEO title, the page title appears.
• If you set a page's SEO title before enabling the noindex tag, the SEO title will still show in browser tabs. Switch the Hide from Search Engines toggle off to edit or delete the SEO title.
• In some cases, Google may show different text.

To add a page's SEO title:

1. Open the Pages panel.
2. In the pages panel, hover over the page and click next to the title.
3. Click the SEO tab and enter your SEO title in the SEO Title field.
4. Click Save.

Collection items

You can also add SEO titles to individual blog posts, events, products, and portfolio sub-pages.

To add an SEO title to a collection item:

1. Open the Pages panel.
2. Click a blog, events, store, or portfolio page.
3. For blog posts and events, hover over the item and click Edit. If your site is on version 7.1, click in the top-right corner after clicking Edit.
4. For products, double-click the product.
5. For portfolio sub-pages, click ..., then click Settings.
6. Click the SEO tab and enter your SEO title in the SEO Title field.
7. Click Save.

Change a page title

The page title is useful if your site displays page titles and you want it to be different than what displays in browser tabs or search engine results. Usually, you only need to add the SEO title.

To edit a page title:

1. Open the Pages panel.
2. In the pages panel, hover over the page and click next to the title.
3. In the General tab, add the Page Title. Page titles must be 100 characters or fewer.
4. Click Save.

Tip: On version 7.1, store page titles display above the category navigation if the Category Title is enabled in section styles. On version 7.0, page titles and page descriptions sometimes display on your site, depending on your template.

Change a navigation title

Navigation titles create links in your navigation menus. They also appear as the page's name in the pages panel when you're logged into your site.

Keeping navigation titles short makes your site easier to navigate and saves space in navigation menus. For example, if the page title that displays on your site is "About Our Team," you could use the navigation title "About."

To edit a navigation title:

1. Open the Pages panel.
2. In the pages panel, hover over the page and click next to the title.
3. Enter a new title under Navigation Title. Navigation titles must be 100 characters or fewer.
4. Click Save.
