Managing and reusing images and videos

Reuse the assets you've uploaded or the stock images you've added to your site.

Last updated January 9, 2025

After you add images or videos to your site, they're saved in your Asset library so you can reuse them throughout your site.

How to reuse assets

When adding an image or video to your site, choose Select from library or Search Images. This opens the My Library tab which shows images and videos you've uploaded to your site, and any free and licensed stock images you've used. You can also select new stock images from the other tabs in this window.

Whether or not you can reuse images or videos depends on where you're adding them:

Images

You can reuse images in most places on your site, including:

Some images don't sync with the Asset library, including:

Videos

You can reuse videos uploaded to the video block, section backgrounds, course pages, and videos pages.

Browse your saved assets

The Assets panel shows images and videos you've uploaded to your site and any free and licensed stock images you've used. You can also view the amount of video storage left for your account.

To view details for each asset or preview a video, hover over the image or video, click the three dots, then click File Details. These details include Filename, Type, Date added, Dimensions, Duration, and Size.

Keep in mind:

  • If you add stock images, they'll appear in the Asset library on the site where they were purchased. It’s not possible to move images between Squarespace sites.
  • When you edit an image, the edited image is saved as a copy in the Asset library.

Tip

To select or deselect all content, select at least one image or video and then click # Selected at the bottom.

Rename saved assets

To change the file name of a saved asset:

  1. Open the Assets panel.
  2. Hover over the image or video and click ....
  3. Click Rename and enter the new file name.
  4. Click Save.

This updates the file name in your Asset library and wherever the asset has been added to your site. If you added the asset to an image block first, then renamed it in the Asset library, the original file name will be preserved as an "alternate filename" in the image block editor.

Keep in mind, the file name acts as alt text in most areas of your site, except for image blocks and auto layouts, which have specific alt text fields in their editors. This means that visitors who use screen readers or who otherwise use alt text for accessibility purposes will use your file names to better understand the images on your site. To learn more, visit Adding alt text to images.

Add content to the Asset library

You can add images and videos directly from your computer to the Asset library for reuse across your site. To add content:

  1. Open the Assets panel.
  2. Drag and drop files from your computer. Or, In the top-right corner, click Add New, click Upload Files, then select one or more image or video files to upload.
  3. You can track the progress of the upload in the bottom-right corner. Once the upload is complete, a green checkmark will appear next to the number of files uploaded.

In the Squarespace app, use the Home tab shortcut to add reusable images from your device.

  1. In the Home tab, tap +, then tap Upload assets to library
  2. Tap all images you want to import, then tap Import
  3. After the import is complete, tap I'm done, or tap Add more to import more images.
  4. When you're done, you'll return to the Home tab.

You can now reuse your imported images when you're logged into your site on a computer. You can also directly upload images from the app to an image block on the computer. It's not possible to upload videos to the Asset library using the Squarespace app.

In the iOS Squarespace app, you can reuse images in the product editor.

If you upload the same image or video to your site multiple times, multiple versions will appear. To avoid confusion, delete the duplicates.

Organize content in the Asset library

You can create an organized structure to the images and videos in your Asset library by using folders.

After they're created, folders appear at the top of your Asset library. By default, they'll display in the order they're created, but you can use the drop-down menu at the top of the page to sort your folders alphabetically by name or by most recent changes.

Tip

Folders carry over to the My Library tab when adding images and videos. This can help you locate key assets faster while editing your site. You can add, rename, move, or delete folders in the Asset Library, but not in the My Library tab.

Delete content from the Asset library

To permanently remove an image or video from your site, delete it from the Asset library. If the image or video you delete from your library still appears on the pages of your site, we’ll automatically remove it from wherever it appears. The removal process isn’t immediate, so content may continue to appear on your site for some time after you delete it from your library.

After we remove an asset from your site, a broken file icon or a blank space may appear where the image or video used to appear. To remove the icon or blank space, follow the same procedure you normally would to delete content from your site.

To delete content from the Asset library:

  1. Open the Assets panel and find your image, video, or folder.
  2. Check the box for each image, video, or folder you'd like to delete.
  3. Click the trash can icon, then click Delete to confirm the deletion of your content.

Keep in mind:

  • Deleted assets are kept in the trash for 30 days.
  • Deleting a folder deletes the folder itself and all the images and videos the folder contains.
  • After you move a video to the trash, it no longer counts toward your video storage limit.
  • Images added to the pages of a site, then deleted off the pages of your site are automatically removed from the asset library in eight to 38 days.
  • Search engines may display your content’s static URL in search results for a period of time if they previously indexed your site’s content.
  • With some search engines, like Google, you can request they re-index your site to remove deleted content from search results. This is outside Squarespace’s control.

Empty trash

When you delete an image or video, it's sent to the trash, where it'll be permanently deleted after 30 days. To delete assets before then, empty the trash. After you empty the trash, the content can't be restored.

  1. Open the Assets panel and click Trash.
  2. Click Empty Trash.
  3. Click Empty Trash in the confirmation message that appears. This action can't be undone.

Restore a deleted asset

You can restore images and videos that you've deleted from your site in the last 30 days. If more than 30 days have passed, it can't be restored.

  1. Open the Asset library and click Trash.
  2. Select the item to restore by checking the box next to the image, video, or folder. You can select multiple assets at a time.
  3. Click Restore.

Keep in mind:

  • When you restore a folder, all of its contents are also restored.
  • Restored items are moved back to their original locations. If an item's original location no longer exists, the item moves to All Files.
  • If you deleted an item that was still in use on your site, restoring it will fix the broken link that displayed after you deleted it.
  • If you try to restore a video, but restoring it will exceed your video storage limit, a pop-up window will appear stating that you don't have enough storage space. You'll need to add a digital products plan for more storage, or delete videos to free up space.

Download content from the Asset library

You can download individual images, one at a time, from the Asset library panel. It's not possible to download all images from your site in bulk.

Note

It's not possible to download your uploaded videos. Ensure you keep a backup of any video files you upload.

To download an image:

  1. Open the Assets panel.
  2. Hover over the image you want to download, click the three dots, then click File Details.
  3. After the image preview loads, right-click the image and save it to your device.

Depending on the size of the original image, it may not be possible to download your original image file from your site. To reduce the risk of losing the original files, keep all image files on your computer after uploading them to your site.
