Adding products to your store

Add products to a Products Page to create a Squarespace Commerce store.

There are four different product types in Squarespace:

You can sell physical and service products as one-time purchases or subscriptions.

In version 7.1, Products Pages are called Store Pages. This guide applies to version 7.0 and version 7.1.

Note: Ensure your products comply with Section 10.2 of our Terms of Service. If you're accepting payments with Stripe or PayPal, ensure your products meet PayPal's Acceptable Use guidelines and don't appear on Stripe's list of prohibited businesses.
Commerce is a Premium feature available in Business and Commerce plans.

How Squarespace organizes products

Products in Squarespace stores are organized in two parts: Products Pages and product details pages.

Products Pages

Products Pages are browsable collections of products. The page includes key details about each product, usually the title, price, and if it's sold out. Clicking on a specific product opens its details page for additional details.

You can have multiple Product Pages on your site. All stores have Products Pages.


Tip: Product Quick View displays additional details without leaving the Products Page.

Product details pages

Every product in a Products Page has its own details page, which includes additional images, variant drop-down menus, and a button for purchasing the item. Product details pages are sub-pages of a Products Page.


Step 1 - Add a Products Page (computer only)

How you add a Products Page depends on which version of Squarespace your site is on.

  1. In the Home Menu click Pages.
  2. Click the + icon, then select Page from the page menu.
  3. Click Store.
  4. Select a store layout.

If you already have a Store Page, you’ll see a page asking you to confirm whether you want to add a new Store Page or a new product category. It’s possible to add multiple Store Pages in version 7.1, but we recommend adding all of your products to a single Store Page. Then add product categories to automatically organize products into filtered pages, which display in a navigation on your Store Page. To add more content to your Store Page, visit Page sections.

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click the + icon, then select Products from the page menu.
  3. Add a page title, then press Enter.

You can also click the the gear icon that appears when you hover over the page title to configure your page's settings.

Step 2 - Add a product

After creating at least one Products Page, you can start adding products.

Each Products Page can have up to 10,000 products. To add a product on the computer in version 7.1:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click a Products Page, then click the + icon. You can also click the + icon in the Inventory panel, then choose the Products Page.
  3. Select a product type. It isn't possible to edit this after creating a product.
Note: The 10,000 product limit is a new feature we're launching in waves to all sites on version 7.1. While this happens, your site may have a temporary limit of 200 products per Store Page.


To add a product on a computer in version 7.0: 

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click a Products Page, then click the + icon. You can also click the icon in the Inventory panel, then choose the Products Page.
  3. Select a product type. It isn't possible to edit this after creating a product. 

Each Products Page can have up to 200 products.

Tip: To expand or collapse the panel, click the vertical line halfway down the page.



To add products on the iOS Commerce App:

  1. In the Inventory tab, tap Add.
  2. Tap the Products Page where the product will display. If you don't have a Products Page yet, add one on a computer.
  3. Select the product type. It isn't possible to edit this after creating a product.

You can add Physical and Service products in the Commerce App. To add other product types, log into your site on a computer.

Product types

Choose from these product types when adding a new product. You can only add physical and service products on mobile.

Physical Merchandise, apparel, and any other physical goods that you ship or deliver to customers. These can be a one-time purchase, or a subscription. If you sell physical products, you'll need to add at least one shipping option to your store.
Digital Ebooks, audio files, and any other digital downloads you sell. When a customer purchases a digital product, they're sent a download link that's active for 24 hours after the link is first clicked.
Service Classes, consultations, events, or any other service you offer. Unlike physical goods, service products aren't shipped to customers, so they don't require shipping methods or a shipping address at checkout. These can be a one-time purchase, or a subscription.
Gift Card Gift cards are unique digital codes that recipients can use as payment in your online store.


If you are eligible, you can turn any physical or service product into a subscription to charge customers on a recurring basis. You can only create subscription products on a computer. To learn more, visit Subscription products

Step 3 - Add product details

Add product details to the fields in the product editor.

Name, description, and image

Use the NameImage, and Description fields to add information for your product. 

Click the Upload images arrow in the image field or drag and drop images from a folder on your computer to add images for the product. 

Multiple images display as thumbnails on the product item view. You can also add variant images from the Pricing & Variants tab. To learn more, visit Product images. Hover over an image and click the gear icon to add alt text.


Pricing and variants

Select Pricing & Variants to define attributes for your product. For Physical and Service products, you can define multiple variants for a product. To learn more, visit Adding basic product variants.

Tags and categories

On the Item tab, click Tags or Categories to organize your products. 

After adding categories to products, the categories create automatic navigation on your Products Pages. The style of this navigation varies. To learn more, visit Organizing products.


Digital products

For Digital products, use the Pricing & Upload tab to set a price and upload your file. To learn more about requirements for digital files, visit Digital products

Name, description, and image

Use the Product Name and Description fields to add information for your product. 

Tap the Image Upload field at the top of the screen to add images from your phone's photo library.  Multiple images display as thumbnails on the product item view.

Pricing and variants

Tap the fields to define these options for your product. Tap Add Variants to add multiple product variants. Learn more in Adding basic product variants.

Tags and categories

Note:If your site is on version 7.1, you may not have the option to add tags and categories in the Commerce App. This is temporary while we work on an updated version.

Tap Organization to add tags and categories to your product. After adding categories to products, the categories create automatic navigation on your Products Pages. The style of this navigation varies. To learn more, visit Organizing products.

Step 4 - Save

When you're finished, save the product.

Click the Save & Publish button to publish the product to your Products Page. This sets the product as available for purchase.

Schedule a product

Instead of publishing a product right away, you can schedule it to appear on your site later, at a time you specify. This is a great option if you release new product lines periodically and want to launch a new collection all at once.

To schedule a product:

  1. In the product editor, click Hidden.
  2. Select Scheduled.
  3. Click the date next to Will be visible.
  4. In the calendar window, select a date and time for the product to become visible. You can also use the slider to make the product visible in a specified number of days from now.
  5. Click Save.

If you already published the product, click Visible, then select Scheduled to hide it until the scheduled date. For more help, visit Editing products.

Scheduled products have a Scheduled status in the Product and Inventory panels. On the product’s scheduled date, the status will change to Visible.

The scheduled date and time are based on your time zone set in Language and Region Settings, not a visitor’s local time. To ensure your products publish when you want them to, ensure your Language and Region Settings are correct.

Tap Save, then Publish to publish the product to your Products Page. This sets the product as available for purchase. To save your progress without publishing the product, tap Save as hidden

To schedule the product to publish in the future:

  1. Tap Product visibility, then tap Scheduled.
  2. Choose the date and time when the product will publish.
  3. Tap Back, then tap Save.

To publish a hidden product, tap Product visibility, then tap Visible.

Additional options (computer only)

Beyond the basics, your site includes other options to help you customize your products.

Add additional information

Click the Additional Info tab to add more details to the product's page using blocks. To learn more, visit Adding additional information to products.

Create a custom product form

You can create custom forms for customers to complete before they can add a product to their cart. For help with this, visit Creating a custom product form.

Add thumbnail and variant images

The first product image you add is set as the thumbnail image by default. You can click the Options tab to change the thumbnail image. The thumbnail image represents your product in Product Blocks, Summary Blocks, and when you share the product on social media. You can also add variant-specific images.

Set product URL

The Product URL provides a direct link to the product. The Product URL will match the product name if no custom URL is specified. The Product URL must be between 3 and 200 characters.

Create a custom button

Products display an Add to Cart button by default. You can change this text in the Options tab by checking Use Custom Add Button Label and entering new text.

If you enable Use Custom Add Button Label and don't enter new text, a blank button will display.

Set as a featured product

Featured Product is a filter used by the Summary Block to highlight specific products. This is useful if you want to display multiple products from different collections in one location. To enable this, in the Options tab, check Featured Product. Then visit Using Summary Blocks for detailed instructions.

Optimize for search engines

Add an SEO title and SEO description to help search engines connect customers with your product. Click the SEO tab to enter relevant text in the SEO Title and SEO Description fields. A preview displays showing what your product's details may look like in search results.

Share on social

Spread the word about your products by pushing them to social networks. Click the Social tab to upload an Alternate Social Sharing Image to appear when you share the product. Click the Share tab to set up the social sharing options. Setting your social sharing toggles on will automatically push the product to the selected social networks when you publish the product.

Tip: Add a Share Button to let your customers share your products on social networks and other websites.

Duplicate the product

You can duplicate a physical or service product to quickly create and customize a new, similar product. Click Duplicate at the bottom of the Edit Product window to create a copy. To learn more, visit Duplicating products.

Enable limited availability labels

Let customers know when your products are low in stock by enabling limited availability labels. When a product dips below an inventory threshold, you can display a label next to the product on the Product Page, Product Blocks, Summary Blocks, and product details page.

Enable the option to buy multiple service products

By default, customers can only buy one service product at a time. If you sell tickets to classes or workshops, toggle on Show service product quantity in your inventory settings so customers can buy multiple service products at once.

Style the Products Page (computer only)

You can customize your Products Page's layout and design with your site's style options.

  • If you have multiple Products Pages, style changes apply to all of them to create a consistent look.
  • Your site may support additional features, such as banner images or page headers, that affect how the Products Page looks.

Shopping cart

The shopping cart icon shows the number of items in a customer's cart, lets customers view their cart, and leads to the checkout page.

How your shopping cart icon displays depends on which version of Squarespace your site is on

The shopping cart icon displays by default, even when the shopper has no items in their cart. Edit your site header to disable it or change its design. To learn more, visit Shopping cart icon display.

When a customer adds a product to their cart, they'll see the shopping cart button appear. Some templates, like Brine, display the shopping cart button when the cart is empty.

If the shopping cart button doesn't appear on your site, ensure Express Checkout is disabled and check that the cart isn't hidden.

You can style the cart in some templates.


A product can have up to:

  • 250 images
  • 100 variants
  • 100 SKUs

Character limits:

  • Categories - 25 characters
  • Product names - 200 characters
  • SKUs - 20 characters
  • Tags - 80 characters

File size limits:

  • Product images should be smaller than 5MB.
  • Digital product files can't exceed 300MB.
