Gallery pages in version 7.0

Last updated March 20, 2024

In version 7.0, gallery pages display images and videos in eye-catching layouts and styles. Gallery pages have specific designs intended to match your template. In this guide, you'll learn how to add a new gallery page and add images and videos to it.

Steps in this guide also apply to project pages.

Accessing this feature

This guide is for version 7.0. In version 7.1, add gallery sections instead.

Before you begin

  • Your gallery page's design, layout, and style options depend on your template. Gallery pages can be slideshows, grids, stacked, or carousels. For gallery designs by template, visit Styling gallery pages in version 7.0.
  • You can add up to 250 images or videos to each gallery page. Large galleries may take longer to load.
  • To add a gallery outside of the gallery page, like on a layout page or blog post, try the gallery block. You may also want to explore the differences between both.

Accessing this feature

On the Squarespace App, adding new gallery pages is only possible in the iOS version.

To add a gallery page, open the Pages panel, then click +, then click Gallery. For detailed steps, visit Adding pages to your navigation.

Add images

Tips

  • Before uploading, review our image formatting guidelines.
  • You can upload multiple images at a time, but you can't upload .zip files or other compressed file formats.
  • The first image added to a gallery page automatically becomes the page's featured image. You can also manually add a featured image.

Upload images

There are three ways to upload your images to a gallery page on a computer:

  • Click + in the side panel, then click Upload image.
  • Click the empty box in the side panel to open your computer's file manager, then click Open or Choose to add the image to the gallery.
  • Drag and drop images into the empty box in the side panel.

You can also reuse an image you've previously uploaded by clicking +, then clicking Search images.

Add stock images

With our stock image integrations, you can search for and add stock images directly from your site. This is a great option if you don't already have an image to use.

To add a stock image, click +, then click Search images. You can also use image search to reuse a stock image you added previously.

Add videos

You can add an externally hosted video from YouTube or Vimeo to a gallery page with its direct URL or an HTML embed code (for advanced display options).

To add a video, click + in the side panel, then click Add video.

Option 1 - Use a URL

Copy the video’s URL from the browser address bar and paste it into the Video URL tab.

Option 2 - Use HTML embed code

To use the video's HTML embed code:

  1. Find the video on the video hosting service.
  2. Most video hosts offer a Share or Embed button. Click Share or Embed, then copy the code provided.
  3. Click the Video embed tab in the video settings.
  4. Paste the code into the text field.

Add image overlays (optional)

You can add an optional thumbnail image for videos. The image displays over the video before it’s played. It could be a title card, a frame from the video, or any other image that encourages visitors to click play.

To add an image overlay, switch the Video thumbnail toggle on, then click Image to upload an image from your computer or Search for images to add a stock image. To remove the image, click Remove image below the thumbnail.

Edit item settings

When you add content to your gallery page by clicking +, the item settings open automatically. Otherwise, hover over the item and click the gear icon to open its settings.

In the editor for each item, you can:

Add titles and descriptions

Titles and descriptions add context to your content. Titles become alt text, which helps search engines understand what your images are, potentially improving SEO. Description style and display options depend on your template.

To add or edit titles and descriptions:

  1. Click the gallery page, then hover over an image or video in the side panel.
  2. Click the gear icon to open the editor.
  3. Add a title and description in the text boxes. Image titles must be 200 characters or fewer.
  4. Click Save.

To add or edit titles and descriptions:

  1. Double-tap an uploaded image to open the image settings.
  2. Tap into the text box under Image title to add or edit the title. Image titles must be 200 characters or fewer.
  3. Tap into the text box under Image description to add or edit the description.
  4. Tap Save.

If image titles and descriptions aren't appearing, there are a couple reasons why this might be happening:

  • They're hidden. To unhide them, open the Site styles panel while on a gallery page and uncheck the Hide gallery descriptions tweak.
  • Your template doesn't support image titles or descriptions. We still recommend adding them, however, as search engines can index them as alt text.

Set the item's publication status

You can set an image or video to Published or unpublished (Draft, Needs review, or Scheduled) at any time. When your item is unpublished, a status banner appears over the image or video thumbnail in the side panel and the item won't be visible on your live site. If you set the item to Published, the banner over the thumbnail disappears and the item appears live on your site.

Your item's initial publication status depends on how you add images or videos to your gallery page:

  • New stock images and images that you reuse from your library default to Published.
  • Video URLs and new images that you upload from your computer or device using the + in the side panel default to Draft.
  • New images you upload to the empty box in the side panel default to Published.

To change any item’s status:

  1. Click the gallery page, then hover over the image or video in the side panel.
  2. Click the gear icon.
  3. Click Status.
  4. Select a new status.
  5. Click Save.

Uploading images on the Squarespace App sets them to Published by default. You can change the status manually after upload. To change any image's status:

  1. Double-tap an uploaded image to open the image settings.
  2. Tap Image status.
  3. Tap Draft, Needs review, Published, or Scheduled.
  4. If you tap Published, you select a publication date and time from the calendar. This date won't display on your site.
  5. If you tap Scheduled, select a publication date and time from the calendar. This date won't display on your site.
  6. Tap the arrow in the top-left corner to return to the image settings.
  7. Tap Save.

Add categories and tags

Use tags and categories to organize content and display images and videos in different groups. Tags and categories won't appear in the gallery itself, but you can use the tag cloud block, archive block, summary block, navigation links, and text links to filter content and help visitors find images by category.

To start adding categories and tags, click Categories or Tags in any image or video editor.

To add or remove tags and categories:

  1. Double tap the image or video where you want to add tags and categories.
  2. Tap Categories or Tags.
  3. Search tags or categories, or find them by scrolling through the list.
  4. Tap the tags or categories you want to add to the image. A checkmark will appear next to the tag or category names when they're selected.
  5. Tap the tags or categories again to remove them. The checkmark will disappear.
  6. After making your selections, tap the arrow in the top right corner to go back to the image settings, then tap Save.

To learn more, visit Categories and tags.

Rearrange images

Gallery images and videos typically display in the same order as the thumbnails in the side panel. You can reorder gallery content by following these steps.

To move one image at a time, click and drag the image around the side panel.

To move multiple images, press and hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) and click all the images you want to move. Then, click and drag the images.

Note

For templates with an Aspect ratio style tweak, choosing Aspect ratio: auto maintains each image's original aspect ratio. As a result, images arrange automatically based on height and may appear in a different order than how they're arranged in the panel. To learn more about gallery page style tweaks, visit Styling gallery pages in version 7.0.

To reorder gallery content:

  1. Tap More, then tap Pages.
  2. Tap the title of the gallery page you want to organize.
  3. Tap Edit or the pencil icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap and hold the image or video you want to move.
  5. Slide the item around the panel, then let go when it's in its new place.
  6. On iOS devices, tap Done or the in the top right corner. On Android devices, the changes save automatically.

Move images between galleries

If you have multiple gallery pages, you can move Gallery images and videos between them. This is a great way to organize content without recreating it.

In the York template family, you can move images between project pages and gallery pages.

Delete images

To delete images from a gallery page:

Select one or more images or videos, then click Remove at the bottom of the panel. Click Confirm to permanently delete the image.

Alternatively, you can click the gear icon on the item you want to delete, then click Delete in the item's settings.

  1. Tap More, then tap Pages.
  2. Tap the title of the gallery page where you want to delete images.
  3. Tap Edit or the pencil icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap the - icon on the image you want to delete, then tap Delete to confirm.
  5. Tap Done or the in the top-right corner.

Replace an image

To replace an image in a gallery while keeping its information, such as title and tags:

  1. Double-click the image to open its editor.
  2. Click Remove image under the image.
  3. Click Image in the image area to upload a new one.
  4. Click Save.

You can use blocks to pull gallery page content from your existing page and display it elsewhere on your site. This is a great way to display images in different formats, highlight categories, or provide a visual link to your gallery page.

The following blocks work well with gallery pages:

  • Gallery block - Displays gallery page content in a Carousel, Grid, Slideshow, or Stack view
  • Summary block - Displays gallery page content and displays as a Wall, Carousel, List, or Grid. You can filter by category or tag
  • Content link block - Provides a visual link to your gallery page using the first gallery image, page title, and page description

FAQ

Gallery pages are designed to display images and videos only, so you won't see any insert points for adding blocks. To feature additional content with a gallery, we recommend replacing your gallery page with a layout page and using a combination of text blocks and gallery blocks. This approach offers greater flexibility to achieve the design you want.

Your gallery page may be in an index page, and you may be viewing the gallery in its index form, which gives gallery pages a unique appearance.

You can tell if you're viewing the gallery in its index form if /#/ appears in the browser address bar. To view the gallery page in its standard form, delete /#/ in your browser address bar.

Why do videos have titles, descriptions, and image overlays that I didn’t add myself?

Videos from YouTube and Vimeo sometimes auto-populate title and description fields and provide an image overlay. To change these, open the video for editing and replace the text or image with your own.

If you added a physical location in your site's Business Information settings, images uploaded to your gallery page will automatically include this location. This information doesn't display on your gallery page and you can manually remove it from the image's Location tab.
