Archive blocks

Help visitors find your content with organized, text-only lists of links to collection items.

Last updated May 1, 2024

Use archive blocks to create organized lists of links to blog posts, events, and products. On version 7.0, archive blocks can list gallery page image titles. Archive blocks are text-only.

In an archive block, you can display content by tag, category, author, and date. You can use archive blocks to add extra navigation to sidebars, footers, and other areas. The blocks update automatically when you add, edit, or delete content.

Before you begin

  • To use archive blocks, you need a blog page, events page, store page, or on version 7.0, gallery page.
  • It's not possible to link an album page, portfolio page, project page, or videos page to an archive block.
  • Archive blocks are text only. It's not possible to display images or videos in an archive block.

Tip

You can create a visual display of your blog posts, events, products, and more using summary blocks.

Add an archive block

To add an archive block:

  1. Edit a page or post, click Add Block or an insert point, then click Archive. For help, visit Adding content with blocks.
  2. Open the block editor by clicking the pencil icon on the block.
  3. In the block editor, click the page with the content you want to feature in the block.
  4. Click Display to select a layout from the Layout drop-down menu.
  5. In Group By drop-down menu, select how you want the content grouped.
  6. Depending on your Group By criteria, use the Sort By drop-down menu to sort the content.
  7. If your site is on version 7.0, click Apply to save your changes.

As you set up the block, the preview will update so you can see how the block will look. We recommend playing with the settings until you find a layout you like. For detailed steps, see the next sections.

Keep in mind:

  • Archive blocks can display content from any type of collection page except portfolio pages and album pages.
  • Each archive block can only display content from one page. To feature content from more pages, add multiple blocks.
  • If you're displaying content from an events page, it's not possible to hide past events.

Select a layout

Click the Display tab to select a layout for the links in the block.

The index layout creates a list of links to individual items organized by headings. The sections and their headings are based on what you select for Group By. You can:

  • Align the text left, right, or center.
  • Sort by date.
  • Make it one column or multiple columns by checking Break into Multiple Columns.
  • Show the dates items were published.
  • Show the number of items in each group (group count).

Example:

The list layout creates a list of general topics, not individual items. The link text is based on what you select for "Group By." You can:

  • Align the text left, right, or center.
  • Make it one column or multiple columns by checking Break into Multiple Columns.
  • Sort by dates (when grouped by month or year).
  • Show the number of items in each group (group count).

The dropdown layout creates a drop-down menu of general topics, not individual items. The menu options are based on what you select for Group By. You can:

  • Add a title.
  • Sort by date (when grouped by month or year).
  • Show the number of items in each group (group count).

Example:

In the Display tab, select how to organize the links in the block from the Group By drop-down menu: by month, year, author, category, or tag. For example, selecting Category will create navigation by category, like in the examples above.

Keep in mind:

  • Each archive block supports one Group By option. To divide content in multiple ways, add multiple archive blocks. For example, you can add one archive block that lists content by tag and another that lists content by month.
  • Archive blocks can display up to 50 groups (months, years, authors, categories, or tags) with a maximum of 100 items per group.

Select a Sort By option to choose the order of the links or sections in the block. The options depend on the Group By criteria.

When grouping by month or year, items appear in descending order by default. Check Sort Dates Ascending to reverse the order.

When grouping by author, select the order of the authors in the list from the Sort By drop-down menu.

Tip

You can change the author names in the bio tab in their contributor profiles.

  • First Name - Alphabetical order by first name
  • Last Name - Alphabetical order by last name
  • Count - Items per author in descending order
  • Activity - Most recently published item by author

When grouping by categories or tags, select Name, Count, or Activity from the Sort By drop-down menu.

  • Name - Category alphabetical order
  • Count - Frequency of item in descending order
  • Activity - Most recently published item with the tag or category
