Categories and tags

Use categories and tags to organize your site and help visitors find content that interest them. You can add categories and tags to most collection items.

Categories and tags are managed per-collection page, not across multiple pages or your whole site. For example, each Products Page or Blog Page can have its own categories or tags.

Categories vs. tags

In general, use categories to organize content by subject or type. We recommend being more selective with how many categories you create. On a Products Page, you might add categories such as Tops, Bottoms, and Accessories. On a recipe blog, you might add categories such as Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

You can use tags more liberally, based on keywords, year, month, subject matter, or anything else visitors might find interesting.

Where to add categories and tags

You can add categories and tags to items in your collection pages. Where you can add categories and tags depends on your site's version:

Only the collection items above support categories and tags. It's not possible to add categories and tags to portfolio sub-pagesgallery sections, Gallery Blocks, or other sets of content.

  • Categories must be 25 characters or fewer.
  • Tags must be 80 characters or fewer.
  • Categories and tags are case-sensitive. For example, entering Apples, apples, and APPLES creates three different categories or tags.
  • Don't use special characters like + or %. These can cause issues with links to categories and tags.
  • You can add as many categories and tags per item as you'd like.

Category and tag display

Categories and tags display differently depending on the page, your style settings, and your site's version:

Blog Pages and posts

To display categories on Blog Pages, edit the page's section styles. Categories can display as Primary Metadata or Secondary Metadata at the top of posts or below the post excerpt. Tags can't display on the blog landing page.

Tags always display on blog posts. To display categories:

  1. In the Home Menu, click the Blog Page, then click the post in Blog Page panel.

Store Pages and products

When you add categories to products, it creates category navigation at the top of the Store Page. It's not possible to hide this. Tags don't display on Store Pages.

Categories and tags don't display on individual products.

Visit your site's template guide to learn how your template displays categories and tags. Below, you'll find examples of how categories and tags display in Blog Pages and Event Pages.

Link to categories and tags

You can link to a set of collection items filtered by category or tag. To learn more, visit Linking to categories or tags.

Use blocks to display or link to categories and tags

You can display or link to content by category or tag in other places across your site:

  • Use Archive Blocks to create organized lists of links to blog posts, gallery images, products, and events. Display and sort content by category or tag in the Display tab.
  • Use Summary Blocks to filter which posts display from the targeted page by category, tag, or both. Enter the category or tag name in the Display tab.
  • Use Tag Cloud Blocks to display lists of categories or tags in various layouts.

Use categories to influence related products

When you add categories to products, you can display related products on product details pages. By default, the related product section uses a product's first category. If it doesn't have a category, it uses the first tag.

Impact on search

Categories and tags are indexed for site search in Search Blocks, so they're useful in helping visitors find relevant content on your site. For more information, visit Search Blocks.

Categories and tags are also indexed by search engines.

Bulk-edit categories or tags

You can bulk-edit a page's categories and tags in the Advanced tab of the page's settings. For example, you can rename categories or tags added to multiple items, remove unused categories or tags, tags, or merge multiple categories or tags.

It isn't possible to bulk-edit the same categories or tags across multiple pages or your whole site. If you have multiple pages with categories or tags, repeat these steps for each page.

Follow the steps below to rename, delete, or merge categories or tags.

Rename categories or tags

To change the category or tag text:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the page and click the gear icon to open page settings.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Click Manage Categories or Manage Tags.
  5. Click the category or tag you want to change.
  6. Click Edit, and rename the category or tag.
  7. Click Save.

The change will apply to every instance of that category or tag on the page.

  4. Click Manage Categories or Manage Tags.
  5. Click all the categories or tags you want to delete. Check marks appear beside selected categories or tags.
  6. Click Delete, then click Confirm in the message that appears.

The category or tag will be removed from every item on the page where it appeared.

To merge two or more categories or tags:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the page and click the gear icon to open page settings.

  7. Click Merge again.

All items with the selected categories or tags will have the new category or tag.

Fix category or tag links after renaming or merging

Renaming or merging categories and tags updates any items they apply to, but it doesn't automatically change or redirect any links to filtered pages. To avoid broken links, manually edit any links and Summary Blocks related to the categories and tags you changed.

For example, if you have a Blog Page using the category "Wedding Flowers 2019," and you rename it "Wedding 2019," any posts in the category will update with the new name. However, if you have a Summary Block that's filtered to only show that category, you'll need to manually update it to show the new category by editing the Summary Block.
