Adding tags and categories

You can use tags and categories to organize content and help visitors find content that interests them. Tags and categories are available in:

Formatting tips:

  • Tags must be 80 characters or fewer.
  • Categories must be 25 characters or fewer.
  • Tags and categories are case-sensitive. For example, entering Apples, apples, and APPLES creates three tags or categories.
  • You can add as many tags and categories per item as you'd like.

Categories vs. tags

In general, use categories to divide content by subject or type. We recommend categorizing relatively conservatively. Too many categories can be confusing or overwhelming to your readers.

In a Products Page, you might categorize your items by type (shirts, pants, rings, bracelets, hats, etc.) In a blog, you might categorize your posts by length or style (haiku, personal essay, dramatic monologue, etc.)

Tags, on the other hand, can be used liberally. In a blog, for a post that you categorized as "haiku," you could also add a tag called "haiku" (so that viewers who search by tag can find all your posts tagged "haiku'), but you can also tag with keywords, year, month, subject matter, or anything else your viewers might find interesting. Tags are like the original hashtag. If you can see yourself saying, "hashtag awesome" or "hashtag beach vacation," consider making those tags.

When a customer clicks on a category or tag in a blog post, they'll see all the posts filtered by that category or tag.

Add categories and tags

The example below is for a product page, but the process is the same for blog posts, gallery images, events, and and album tracks.

Step 1 - Open the item

You can add tags and categories in the editor for each collection type.

In the Home Menu, click Pages, then click the page containing the content you want to tag or categorize (for example, a Blog Page or Product Page).

Hover over an item title (for example, a blog post or product), and click Edit.

The links to add tags and categories are at the bottom of the window.


Step 2 - Add tags

Click Tags +, enter a tag in the Add Tags box, and then press Enter.

Step 3 - Add categories

To add a new category, click Categories +, click Create Category, enter a category in the box, and then press Enter.

To add an existing category, click the categories list, and then select a category from the Pick Category list.

Step 4 - Save

After adding tags or categories, click Save or Save & Publish.

Tags and categories display differently depending on the page and your template. Below, you'll find examples of how tags and categories display in Blog Pages and Event Pages.



Use blocks to display tags and categories

In addition to showing them in a post or item, you can display tags and categories in other blocks.

Archive Block

You can use Archive Blocks to create organized lists of links to blog posts, gallery images, products, and events. Display and sort content by tag or category within the Display tab.

Summary Block

Use Summary Blocks to filter which posts display from the targeted page by tag, category, or both. Click the Display tab to enter the tag or category name.

Button Block

Using Button Blocks, you can add buttons that link to categories of items (blog posts, for example). In the settings for Button Blocks, click the click to add URL option, click Content in the link editor, and then locate the page containing the tagged or categorized items you want to target.

Click the small arrow next to that page in the list, and select a tag or category from the appropriate list below.

Tag Cloud Blocks have a few options for displaying a list of tags or categories.

Link to categories and tags

You can link to a collection filtered by tag or category from your site navigation, text, images, and buttons. To learn more, visit Adding a navigation link for a category or tag.

Some page types display links to filtered content automatically:

  • Events Pages - "Filtering by:" text appears before the category or tag. The text style follows the body text.
  • Products Pages - For categories, the category navigation shows that category as active.
  • Blog Pages - In some templates, the filtering category or tag displays at the top with accompanying text.
Tip: For Blog Pages, you can choose the number of posts that appear on the landing page in Blog Page Settings.

Impact on search

Tags and categories are indexed for search in Search Blocks, so they're useful in helping visitors find relevant content on your site. For more information, visit Using Search Blocks.

Tags and categories are also indexed by search engines.
