Categories and tags

Use categories and tags to organize your site and help visitors find content that interest them. Categories and tags are available in:

  • Album tracks
  • Blog posts
  • Events
  • Gallery images
  • Products
  • Project images (York template only)

Categories and tags are managed per-collection page, not across multiple pages or your whole site. For example, each Products Page or Blog Page can have its own categories or tags.

Formatting tips:

  • Categories must be 25 characters or fewer.
  • Tags must be 80 characters or fewer.
  • Categories and tags are case-sensitive. For example, entering Apples, apples, and APPLES creates three categories or tags.
  • You can add as many categories and tags per item as you'd like.

Category and tag display

Categories and tags display differently depending on the page, your template, and Site Styles. Below, you'll find examples of how categories and tags display in Blog Pages and Event Pages.

Categories vs. tags

In general, use categories to organize content by subject or type. We recommend being more selective with how many categories you create. In a Products Page, you might add categories such as Tops, Bottoms, and Accessories. In a recipe blog, you might add categories such as Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

You can use tags more liberally, based on keywords, year, month, subject matter, or anything else visitors might find interesting.

Add categories and tags

Add categories and tags in the editor for each collection item. When you add a new category or tag to a collection item, it saves to the page so you can add it to other items in the page.

To add categories or tags:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages, then click the page with the item you want to categorize or tag (for example, a Blog Page or Product Page).
  2. Open the editor of an item (for example, a blog post or a product). Categories and Tags appear in the bottom-left of the window.
  3. To add tags, click Tags, enter a tag, and press Enter.
  4. To add a new category, click Categories, click Create Category, enter a category, and press Enter.
  5. To add a category or tag you've added previously, click Categories or Tags, then select one from the list.
  6. After adding categories or tags, click Save or Save & Publish.

Use blocks to display or link to categories and tags

You can display or link to content by category or tag in other places across your site:

  • Use Archive Blocks to create organized lists of links to blog posts, gallery images, products, and events. Display and sort content by category or tag in the Display tab.
  • Use Summary Blocks to filter which posts display from the targeted page by category, tag, or both. Enter the category or tag name in the Display tab.
  • Use Button Blocks to add buttons that link to items filtered by category or tag.
  • Use Tag Cloud Blocks to display lists of categories or tags in various layouts.

Link to categories and tags

You can link to a collection filtered by category or tag from text, images, buttons, and your site navigation. To learn more, visit Linking to categories or tags.

Use categories to influence related products

When you add categories to products, you can display related products on product item pages. By default, the related product section uses a product's first category. If it doesn't have a category, it uses the first tag.

Impact on search

Categories and tags are indexed for search in Search Blocks, so they're useful in helping visitors find relevant content on your site. For more information, visit Using Search Blocks.

Categories and tags are also indexed by search engines.

Bulk-edit categories or tags

You can bulk-edit a page's categories and tags in the Advanced tab of the page's settings. For example, you can rename categories or tags added to multiple items, remove unused categories or tags,  tags, or merge multiple categories or tags.

It isn't possible to bulk-edit the same categories or tags across multiple pages or your whole site. If you have multiple pages with categories or tags, repeat these steps for each page.

To open Advanced page settings:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the page and click the gear icon to open page settings.

Fix category or tag links after renaming or merging

Renaming or merging categories and tags updates any items they apply to, but it doesn't automatically change or redirect any links to filtered pages. To avoid broken links, manually edit any links and Summary Blocks related to the categories and tags you changed.

For example, if you have a Gallery Page using the category "Wedding Flowers 2017," and you rename it "Wedding 2017," any images in the category will update with the new name. However, if you have a Summary Block that's filtered to only show that category, you'll need to manually update the new category in by editing the Summary Block
