Categories and tags

Organize collection items by topic or other shared details to help visitors find the content they want.

Last updated January 30, 2025

Use categories and tags to organize your site and help visitors find content that interests them. You can add categories and tags to most collection items.

Categories and tags are managed per-collection page, not across multiple pages or your whole site. For example, each blog page can have its own categories or tags.

Categories vs. tags

In general, use categories to organize content by subject or type. We recommend being more selective with how many categories you create. On a store page, you might add categories such as Tops, Bottoms, and Accessories. On a recipe blog, you might add categories such as Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

You can use tags more liberally, based on keywords, year, month, subject matter, or anything else visitors might find interesting.

Where to add categories and tags

You can add categories and tags to items in your collection pages. Where you can add categories and tags depends on your site's version.

Only the collection items above support categories and tags. It's not possible to add categories and tags to portfolio sub-pagesgallery sections, gallery blocks, or other sets of content.

Add categories and tags in the editor for each collection item. When you add a new category or tag to a collection item, it saves to the page so you can add it to other items in the page.

Formatting tips

  • Categories need to be 25 characters or fewer.
  • Tags need to be 80 characters or fewer.
  • Categories and tags are case-sensitive. For example, entering Apples, apples, and APPLES creates three different categories or tags.
  • Don't use commas or other special characters like +, &, or %. These can cause issues with links to categories and tags.
  • You can add as many categories and tags per item as you'd like.

Category and tag display

Categories and tags display differently depending on the page, your style settings, and your site's version:

Blog pages and posts

To display categories on blog pages, edit the page's section styles. Categories can display as Primary Metadata or Secondary Metadata at the top of posts or below the post excerpt. Tags can't display on the blog landing page.

Events pages and events

Categories and tags don't display on the main events page.

Store pages and products

When you add categories to products, category navigation appears at the top of the store page or in a sidebar, depending on your section style settings. Category navigation always displays at the top on mobile browsers.

Tags don't display on store pages, and categories and tags don't display on individual products.

To learn more, visit Organizing products.

Videos on videos pages

When you add categories to videos, it creates category navigation at the top of the videos page. It's not possible to hide this navigation. To style the category navigation, visit Styling videos pages. You can’t add tags to videos pages.

Categories can display above or below a video's featured image on the main videos page, as either Primary meta content or Secondary meta content. To hide a video’s category on the videos page, select Date or None for both meta content options.

To display categories on the video details page, open the video details page style settings and switch the Show categories toggle on. If you enable related videos, you can also filter what videos display on the video details page by category.

Visit your site's template guide to learn how your template displays categories and tags. Below, you'll find examples of how categories and tags display in blog pages and event pages.

You can link to a set of collection items filtered by category or tag. To learn more, visit Linking to categories or tags.

You can display or link to content by category or tag in other places across your site:

  • Use archive blocks to create organized lists of links to blog posts, gallery images, products, and events. Display and sort content by category or tag in the display tab.
  • Use summary blocks to filter which posts display from the targeted page by category, tag, or both. Click Filter Items in the content tab and select the category or tag name.
  • Use tag cloud blocks to display lists of categories or tags in various layouts.

When you add categories to products, you can display related products on product details pages. By default, the related product section uses a product's first category. If it doesn't have a category, it uses the first tag.

Categories and tags are indexed for site search in search blocks, so they're useful in helping visitors find relevant content on your site. To learn more, visit search blocks.

Categories and tags are also indexed by search engines.

Bulk-edit categories or tags

You can bulk-edit a page's categories and tags in the page's settings. For example, you can rename categories or tags added to multiple items, remove unused categories or tags, tags, or merge multiple categories or tags.

It's not possible to bulk-edit the same categories or tags across multiple pages or your whole site. If you have multiple pages with categories or tags, repeat these steps for each page.

For blog and events pages on version 7.1, categories and tags don't appear in the page settings if they've only been added to drafts. Publish the posts or events to manage new categories and tags in page settings.

Follow the steps below to rename, delete, or merge categories or tags.

Rename categories or tags

Follow the steps below to rename categories and tags on most collection pages.

Merge categories or tags

Follow the steps below to merge two or more categories or tags on most collection pages.

Categories on store pages in version 7.1 work differently. To learn more, visit Organizing products. You can't merge categories on videos pages.

To merge two or more categories or tags:

  1. Open the Pages panel.
  2. Hover over the page and click the gear icon to open page settings.

  7. Click Merge again.

All items with the chosen categories or tags will have the new category or tag.

Renaming or merging categories and tags updates any items they apply to, but it doesn't automatically change or redirect any links to filtered pages. To avoid broken links, manually edit any links and summary blocks related to the categories and tags you changed.

For example, if you have a blog page using the category "Wedding Flowers 2019," and you rename it "Wedding 2019," any posts in the category will update with the new name. However, if you have a summary block that's filtered to only show that category, you'll need to manually update it to show the new category by editing the summary block.
