Using the Montauk template

Montauk, Julia, Kent, and Om are in the same template family. This means they share the same underlying structure and functionality. The directions in the Montauk guides apply to all these templates.

See the left navigation for guides about building and customizing specific parts of your site.  If you haven't yet installed a template, you can get help with initial installation at Getting started with Squarespace.

Note: Visit the MontaukJuliaKent, and Om Live Preview pages for examples of real customer sites using these templates. If you've already created a site, you can switch your template at any time.

Special features

Montauk, Julia, Kent, and Om feature product category navigation and a versatile Index Page portfolio, putting your information, products, or love story in the spotlight.

Customizable site header

Your personal or business contact information can display in the site header with the main navigation and site title or logo. This can include an address and phone number, tag line, or custom content.

Grid-style Index Page

Create a grid Index Page to organize multiple pages into a single collection. This is useful if you have multiple galleries or projects, or if you want to use images to represent links to your content.

Page banners

Create a banner image or video and add a text overlay at the top of any Regular, Blog, or Events page.

Special footers

These templates support three footer areas: a page-specific footer, a site-wide info footer, and a site-wide bottom footer. You can customize the content in any of these footers.

Quick start

Certain tweaks and settings can make a big impact on how your site looks and behaves. Play with the following options until you settle on a design you love.

To open any panel, press the ? key and search for its name.

Site

Open the Style Editor panel. These are some key tweaks that affect the whole site:

  • Colors > Site Background and Site Background Image
  • Colors > Canvas Background
  • Options > Page Borders
  • Options > Canvas Style
  • Options > Header Subtitle
  • Options > Hide Page Banner

Index

Open your Pages panel and click the + icon to add an Index Page. Click Add Page to add pages, or drag in existing pages. To get a feel for how your Index works, we suggest adding at least four pages, and adding thumbnail images to each of them.

Click on your Index Page title in the navigation and open the Style Editor. To style your Index Page, try these key tweaks:

  • Index Styles > Index Thumb Title Color
  • Index Styles > Thumbnails Per Row
  • Index Styles > Thumbnail Ratio
  • Index Styles > Thumbnail Opacity
  • Index Styles > Full Width Index
