Adding a site title

Change the name of your site and customize how it displays on the web.

Last updated December 10, 2024

The site title is the name of your site, which could be your own name, a business's name, the name of your blog, or your personal brand. The site title usually appears in the header or top corner of each page of your site. You can replace it with a logo.

The site title may appear in browser tabs, search engine results, and social shares, depending on your SEO title format.

Tip

Site title behavior

The site title always leads to your homepage when it’s clicked.

Squarespace doesn't have a built-in option for directing a site title to a different page other than your homepage. However, you can accomplish this by adding custom code. To learn more, visit this post in the Squarespace Forum. Keep in mind, custom code modifications fall outside the scope of our support. This means we’re unable to help you set up or troubleshoot code-based solutions.

Avoid using angle brackets around your title text, like: My <website>. Angle brackets used this way may make parts of your title invisible or cause other issues, as text placed in angle brackets renders as code.

Change your SEO title format

Choose what title displays in browser tabs, search engine results, and social shares for your homepage by setting its SEO title format. To make this different from your site title, remove the %s variable, or add more text and variables.

Using different text in the SEO title format is useful when:

  • You want the title that displays in search and browsers to be different from the title that displays on your site
  • You've replaced your site title with a logo
  • You want to add keywords to the title without them appearing on your site

Use a logo instead

For a personal touch, you might want to use a logo image instead of a text-only title. When you upload a logo, it appears in the same position as the site title. It will also direct to your homepage when clicked.

We recommend keeping text in the Site Title field, even when you’re using a logo. This creates the logo's alt text. It also may appear in browser tabs, search engine results, and social shares, depending on your SEO title format.

In version 7.0, some templates display the site title on mobile or smaller displays, even when you’ve uploaded a logo image. For a full list of this behavior, visit Site title and logo display.

Update your site title in search results

Your site title plays a key role in representing your site to potential visitors in search engine results. If your site title is showing incorrectly in Google:

  1. Check your SEO title format and make any changes.
  2. Submit your site to Google Search Console and request a re-index to update your site's information.
