Blog excerpts

Grab visitors' attention by displaying snippets from your blog posts.

Last updated September 10, 2024

Blog excerpts give your readers a taste or teaser of a full blog post. When visitors see an excerpt that grabs their attention, they can click the title, image, or Read More link to open the full post.

If you write longer posts, or if your posts have several images or videos, showing excerpts can make your blog page easier for visitors to browse and navigate.

Tip

In all templates, you can display featured images with excerpts in summary blocks.

If the excerpt doesn't appear

If you've added an excerpt, saved, and refreshed the page, and the excerpt doesn't appear, you may need to change your site's settings.

Most blog page layouts display excerpts automatically. If they aren't appearing, change your blog section styles:

  1. Open the Pages panel and click the blog page.
  2. Click Edit in the top-left corner of the page.
  3. Click the pencil icon.
  4. In the Format tab, scroll down to Excerpt and select Show. For the Single-Column Blog layout, select Excerpt and Title from the Content Display drop-down.
  5. Click Save to save your changes and keep editing, or click Exit and then Save to close the editor.

Tip

If you have multiple blog pages, repeat these steps for each blog page.

Some templates give you the option to add excerpts without displaying them on your blog page. If they don't appear, you may need to enable excerpts in page settings, site styles, or both. Follow the steps below on a computer to enable excerpts for your template.

Step 1 - Enable excerpts in page settings

You can either display full posts or excerpts in these template families:

  • Brine
  • Tremont
  • York

To show excerpts, enable them in page settings:

  1. Open the Pages panel.
  2. Hover over the blog page and click .
  3. In the Advanced tab, use the Post Display drop-down menu to choose Excerpt.
  4. Click Save and refresh the page.

Tip

If you have multiple blog pages, enable excerpts in each blog page's settings.

If the excerpts still don't appear, or if you're using a different template, move on to the next step.

Step 2 - Enable excerpts in site styles

Use the following style tweaks to show excerpts in these template families:

  • Brine - Show Excerpt in the Blog: List section
  • SkyeShow Excerpt On Blog List in the Blog Grid Options section
  • TremontShow Excerpt in the Blog: List section
  • YorkShow Excerpt in the Blog: List section

On most Squarespace sites, blog post excerpts automatically include a Read More link, which opens the full blog post. Display and styling options depend on your site's version of Squarespace.

Read More links can display independently of blog post excerpts. To show or hide the Read More link, change your blog section styles:

  1. Open the Pages panel and click the blog page.
  2. Click Edit in the top-left corner of the page.
  3. Click the pencil icon.
  4. In the Format tab, scroll down to Read More Link and select Show or Hide.
  5. Click Save to save your changes and keep editing, or click Exit and then Save to close the editor.

Font

To change the Read More link font:

  1. While editing your blog page, open Site styles, then click > next to Fonts.
  2. Click Assign Styles
  3. Under Blog, click Excerpt, then click Style and Size to assign a style for each option.
  4. Click Save.

Color

The Read More link color follows your section's color theme. To change it:

  1. Open the Pages panel and click the blog page.
  2. Click Edit in the top-left corner of the page.
  3. Click the pencil icon, then click Colors.
  4. Select a new color theme, or click the pencil icon on your selected color theme to further customize.
  5. Scroll to the Blog section matching your layout and change the Read More Link color.
  6. Click Save to save your changes and keep editing, or click Exit and then Save to close the editor.

Most templates include a Read More link in the excerpt. Some also include a + or → symbol.

These template families don't include "Read More" links:

  • Farro
  • Galapagos - Displays "Continue" and an arrow instead of "Read More"
  • Pacific
  • Skye

Font and color

In most templates, the Read More link follows the font of your site's body text and the color of your body link text. These template families have different style settings:

  • Brine - Use the Read More Link Font and Color tweaks in the Blog: Typography & Colors section of site styles.
  • Five - No font style options.
  • Native - No font style options.
  • Tremont - Use the Read More Link Font and Color tweaks in the Blog: Typography & Colors section.
  • York - Use the Read More Link Font and Color tweaks in the Blog: Typography & Colors section.

Event Page excerpts don't display Read More links.

Excerpts vs. full posts

How your blog page displays posts that don't have excerpts depends on your site's version of Squarespace.

The Single Column Blog layout can display full posts instead of excerpts. To do this:

  1. Open the Pages panel and click the blog page.
  2. Click Edit in the top-left corner of the page.
  3. Click the pencil icon.
  4. In the Format tab, scroll down to Content Display and select Full Post.
  5. Click Save to save your changes and keep editing, or click Exit and then Save to close the editor.

It's not possible to display full posts on other blog post layouts, even if you hide the excerpts.

In most template families, if your blog post doesn't have an excerpt, the full post displays instead. This means you can mix excerpts and full posts on your blog landing page. This example is from the Adirondack template:

In templates that support the grid/stacked blog page (Brine family, Tremont family, York family), you can either have excerpts or full text, but not both. If you've enabled excerpts, and you've chosen the stacked layout, ensure all your blog posts include excerpt text. Otherwise, you'll end up with blank areas on your blog landing page, like in this Brine example:

Templates with grid-only blog pages never show full posts. This includes these template families:

  • Farro
  • Skye

Writing tips and best practices

A good excerpt piques your readers' interest. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Describe the post - Summarize the post in a sentence or two so readers know what it's about.
  • Tease the first paragraph - Copy and paste the first paragraph of the post and end it with an ellipses (...) to give readers a taste and show there's more.
  • Ask a question - Ask a question to prompt readers to click through to learn the answer.

Display excerpts in summary blocks

To create a different style for a blog landing page, you can also use a summary block. Summary blocks have several customization options, and you can display excerpts and featured images in them to create a similar feel to a blog page.

To ensure the excerpts display, switch the Excerpt, Thumbnail, and Read More Link toggles on in the Design tab of the summary block's editor.
