Last updated January 27, 2025

This guide covers billing for domain subscriptions and important details about managing your domain, such as how to access billing information, add years to your registration, and more.

To learn more about managing billing information for other subscriptions, review the guides below:

Accessing your domain’s billing information

How you access your domain’s billing information depends on your domain provider and whether or not you have a resold domain. Review the sections below to help identify your provider ‌and where you can access your domain’s billing information.

Squarespace domains

Squarespace is your domain provider and you manage your billing information through your Squarespace account if one of the following applies to you:

To access and update your billing information and view invoices, open your Domains dashboard and click the domain. Then click Billing. If you're having trouble logging into your account, visit I can't log in.

If you have multiple Squarespace domains, or subscribe to various Squarespace products (websites, Email Campaigns, etc), review the section below to learn whether your domain shares billing information with another subscription.

Third-party domains

If you purchased a domain from a third-party provider, meaning a company that isn't Squarespace (for example HostGator, GoDaddy, or 1&1), you need to manage billing for your domain with that provider.

To find your domain provider:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Review the Provider column for the domain in question.
  3. If your domain provider is listed as Unknown, visit Who’s my domain provider to learn how to find your provider using Whois records.

Resold domains

If you signed up for Google Workspace through Google, and during the signup process you registered a new Squarespace domain, you have a resold domain for which Google Workspace is the reseller.

Both Google and Squarespace manage different aspects of resold domains. Contact Google Workspace's support team for help with domain billing. This includes cancellations, enabling or disabling auto-renew, and updating payment information. To learn more about getting support for your resold domain, visit Managing domains registered through Google Workspace.

To find out if you have a resold domain:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Click the domain in question to open the domain details page.
  3. If you purchased your domain from a reseller, the reseller's name appears under the domain's expiration date.

Reviewing the details of your Squarespace domain subscription

To check details about your Squarespace Domain subscriptions:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Find the domain you want to check.
  3. View your domain's information, including:
    • Provider - Your domain provider. If Squarespace is listed, the next two fields will show.
    • Status - If the domain is active, expired, or suspended.
    • Expiration - When it's set to renew or expire.
  4. To view more details, click the domain to open the domain details page.

Squarespace domain registration and renewals

You can register multiple domain names through Squarespace on all trial sites, and on most paid Squarespace plans. To learn more about the registration process, visit Registering Squarespace domains.

By default, all Squarespace domains are set to auto-renew. You can review the renewal date for the domain in the domains dashboard. The domain owner will receive an email 15 days before the renewal date letting them know they’ll soon be charged for the domain subscription.

If you don't want your domain to renew automatically, you can disable auto-renew in the domain details page. If you disable auto-renew and let your domain expire, someone else can register it and use it for their site. Even if you're not using your domain or site now, you may want to hold on to your domain for later.

What happens if my renewal fails?

If we can't charge the payment method on file, your domain will remain active and past-due for 15 days. We'll ‌try to charge your payment method every five days after the initial failed charge. After the third attempt, 15 days after the payment was due, the domain will no longer resolve to your site. We highly recommend that you keep an active, valid payment method on file to ensure uninterrupted service.

Note

If you pay using SEPA, we won’t try to process your payment a second time. To learn more, visit Troubleshooting SEPA payment failures.

After 15 days, you'll have a 30-day grace period in which you can reactivate your domain from your domain details page. After 30 days (45 days total after the renewal date), the domain will be released back to the registrar.

To learn more, visit Squarespace domain renewals and expiration.

Grouped and ungrouped domains

If you have more than one Squarespace domain, or subscribe to multiple Squarespace products, your domain can fall into one of the following categories:

  • Ungrouped domains - have independent billing information. For example, when you update an ungrouped domain’s payment method, it doesn’t update the payment method for any other domains.
  • Grouped domains - share billing information with other domains. For example, if you update a grouped domain’s payment method, we’ll update all of the domains in that group with the same payment method.
  • Domains that share billing information with other Squarespace products, such as a website subscription. Similar to grouped domains, if you update the payment method for your domain, we’ll also update the website subscription associated with that domain with the same payment method.

Check if your domain shares billing information with any other subscriptions

When updating a domain’s billing information, determine if any other domains or subscriptions will be affected by following the steps below:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Click a Squarespace domain name, click Billing, then click Payment information.
  3. A "Changing payment here will impact all subscriptions associated" banner appears at the top of the page.
  4. Click View subscriptions, to view all subscriptions that the billing information update will affect. Click Domains under Active subscriptions to view all domains grouped with that domain.
  5. If no banner appears, your domain is on a parking page and not connected with another domain or associated with another Squarespace subscription.

Group or ungroup your domains

Adding years to a domain registration

You can extend the registration term length of a registered domain. Before adding years, you can review our list of registration term lengths per TLD. To add years to your domain registration:

  1. Open your domains dashboard, then click the domain you’re editing.
  2. Click Overview.
  3. Under Expires On, click Add years.

Note

Add years will not appear if you’ve already registered the domain for the maximum term allowed for the TLD.

  1. Follow the prompts to complete your purchase.

Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel your domain immediately and receive a refund within five days of registration. After this five-day period, we don't offer refunds. If you no longer want the domain, you can disable auto-renew to ensure the domain subscription expires on its next renewal date.

Your primary domain can't be removed. If the domain you want to remove is your primary domain, first set a different primary domain.

To cancel your domain immediately and receive a refund:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Click the domain to remove.
  3. Click Delete domain, and then click Confirm. This can't be undone.

To learn more about domain cancelations and refunds, visit Canceling a Squarespace domain and Refund policies.

Free Squarespace domain offer

All eligible Squarespace sites on an annual billing plan include one free custom domain for one year. This domain is free for the first year, starting from the date it's registered or transferred. This offer is valid within one year of signing up or switching to an eligible plan.

Domain Billing FAQ

What happens to my free domain if I downgrade to monthly billing?

If you switch from annual to monthly billing, your domain will expire at what would be the end of your annual billing cycle. You'll receive an email notification 30 days before the expiration date.

If I upgrade from a monthly to annual billing cycle, can I get a refund for a domain I bought?

We can’t convert a domain you already bought to a free domain. However, you can take advantage of this benefit by registering another domain for free. For example, you may want to register a .net version of your domain.

What happens to my domain if I delete my Squarespace site?

If you delete your Squarespace site, you'll have the option to either let your domain expire or renew it for an annual fee. If you renew, you'll continue to manage the domain through Squarespace.

If you're moving your site to a different provider, we'd be sad to see you go, but you may want to transfer your domain to the new provider so it works with your new site.

To review all of these options, visit What to do with your domain if you cancel your website.

Do I have to pay to renew my one free domain?

All free domains registered as of March 5, 2015 will be free for the first year of service. After one year of service, the domain will renew for $20. We'll charge the payment method connected to your site.

If you registered a free domain prior to March 5, 2015, your domain will continue to renew for free every year that your site remains active.

What happens if my site expires?

If your site expires while your Squarespace domain is still active, you can continue managing your domain from the expired site. You can also reactivate the site or move your domain to another site on your account.

If you're canceling your site, review your domain options before canceling service.
