Product variants are variations of a product with different attributes like size or color. Variants let customers choose between product options using drop-down menus.
You can create variants for new and existing products. Each variant has its own SKU. A single product can have up to 100 variants.
For help adding products to your store, visit Adding products to your store.
Tip: For products with multiple options, visit Adding complex product variants.
Note: Only physical and service products support variants.

Step 2 - Add product options and variants
Note: We recently updated the product composer, which we’re releasing in waves to all Squarespace sites. If the steps in this guide don’t match what you see on your site, visit Using the new product composer instead.
In the product editor, click the Pricing & Variants tab.
The product needs at least one unique attribute such as size, color, or style.
Click the + button to add a new product option.
Enter the Option Name and then click Save Option.
In the product editor, click the + button below the Image field to add new product variants. This copies the previous variant for you to edit.
Variants are case-sensitive, so the options Red and red will display separately in a variant drop-down menu. Ensure there are no extra spaces after the option, as this can cause an option to display twice in the variant drop-down menu.
You can define these options:
Image | You can add a different image for each variant, which will display when customers select the variant on the product details page. To learn more, visit Product images. |
SKU | This is the inventory identifier for your product. Squarespace creates one automatically, but you can change it to a SKU that matches your inventory format. |
Pricing | Set the price customers will pay for the product with an additional field for sale pricing. |
Stock | Define the number of units available with an option to set an Unlimited stock value. |
Weight | Set a weight value for each item (ensure your site's measurement settings are correct). Not needed for service products. |
Dimensions | Set the dimensions in inches for each item. This affects shipping prices if you use carrier calculated shipping. (Not needed for service products.) |
Here’s a preview of how variants will look in your store. The actual layout depends on your template and design options. It's not possible to change the font that displays in the variant drop-down menu:
The quantity field
The quantity field displays on the product details page if:
- The product's stock level is greater than one
- It has variants, regardless of the individual variant stock levels
To display the current stock level for each variant on the product details page, enable limited availability labels. This will stop customers from trying to add more than one product to their cart when the stock level is one.
