Options to deactivate your website subscription.
You can end your individual website subscription or website platform plan at any time using one of two methods:
- Cancel your subscription or plan, which immediately takes your site offline.
- Disable auto-renew, which causes your site to expire at the end of its billing cycle.
This guide will review both of these methods, alternatives to consider before ending your subscription, and what happens after cancellation or expiration.
Before you cancel
Before ending your subscription, you may want to consider the following:
- All site content is marked for permanent deletion 30 days after cancellation or expiration.
- Before ending your site, you can export your content so you can import it to a new site.
- Ending your subscription also cancels:
- Your store if you’re on a Commerce plan.
- Customer subscriptions - Customers would need to restart their subscriptions by purchasing the products again.
- If you cancel your annual billing plan within 14 days of the first payment, you lose your eligibility for the free domain offer. You'll receive a prorated refund, with a $20 deduction to cover the nonrefundable domain registration fee.
- If you want to move a website subscription from one site to another, you need to end your current site subscription, and start a new one. It’s currently not possible to move a website subscription from one site to another.
- If you're on a legacy pricing plan, you can't reactivate on that same plan after canceling. To learn more, visit Legacy website billing plans.
- Member Area memberships pause after cancellation or expiration. After reactivating your site, your memberships are reinstated and members are charged for the pay periods during the pause.

Alternatives to consider
Before ending your Squarespace website subscription, consider the following options for optimizing your site performance or decreasing your site costs:
- Change your website plan or billing cycle to meet your needs and budget.
- Optimize your site for search engines and increase your site's visibility by completing our SEO checklist.
- If you have a Squarespace version 7.0 site, you can switch templates or move to the latest version of the platform, version 7.1.
- Make style changes to update and improve your site's design.
- Hire a Squarespace Expert to help you with your site.
- If you want to keep your site, but cut down on costs, consider ending other active subscriptions. All Squarespace subscriptions are independent from each other, and changing or ending one service won’t automatically affect the others. Tip: Instead of ending your subscription, you can temporarily un-publish, or hide your site while you make large scale changes to it. You can then re-publish whenever you're ready.
After we collect your payment, we follow these refund rules:
- Full refunds are issued automatically for annual website subscriptions canceled within 14 days of the first payment. Refunds may take 3 to 10 business days to process.
- We don't offer refunds after 14 days following the first payment.
- We don't offer refunds for monthly plans.
- We don't offer refunds for renewal payments.

Option 1 - Cancel your subscription
This option ends your subscription immediately and takes your site offline. Before canceling, you may want to review the things to consider section above.
To cancel your website subscription:
- Open the Billing panel of the site you'd like to cancel.
- Under Subscriptions, click one of the following options: Website, Commerce, or Squarespace depending on your subscription or plan.
- Click Cancel subscription. This will be Website or Store, depending on your plan.
- Select your reason for canceling your subscription from the drop-down menu, then click Next.
- Complete the rest of the form to share your experience with Squarespace. If you prefer not to answer, click Next.
- If you have active subscriptions attached to your site, you’ll see a Your other subscriptions panel. Review your subscriptions, then click Continue. You can cancel them later.
- Click Cancel subscription. This will be Website or Store, depending on your plan.
Option 2 - Disable auto-renew
Your Squarespace website subscription automatically renews annually or monthly for your convenience. By disabling auto-renew, you can set your subscription to expire at the end of your current billing cycle. Before disabling auto-renew, you may want to review the things to consider section above.
To disable auto-renew:
- Open the Billing panel of the site you'd like to expire.
- Under Subscriptions, click Website or Store, depending on your plan.
- Switch the Renew automatically toggle off.
What you can access on an expired site
When your site expires, you can still access some panels when you're logged in:
- Billing panel - View or change your card on file, and view your invoices.
- Developer tools panel - Export your site's content if it's still available.
- Domains panel - Manage domain subscriptions and connections.
- Google Workspace panel - Manage your Google Workspace subscription.
- Permissions panel - Review which contributors can log in.
- Commerce panel - View panels about your past sales, including orders, customers, and payments. You may also issue refunds for past sales.
- Email Campaigns panel - If your Email Campaigns subscription is still active, you can view your Email Campaigns dashboard, draft and send campaigns, and manage your subscription.
- Member Areas panel - If your Member Areas subscription is still active, you can view panels about your past membership sales, including member profiles.
- Profiles panel - You can view all of your customers, mailing list subscribers, members, and donors.
- Scheduling panel - If your Acuity subscription is still active, you can view your Acuity panel and manage your appointments.
What happens to my other subscriptions?
When your website subscription ends, other subscriptions won’t be canceled automatically.
You'll continue managing any active subscriptions through your expired site. What you do with these subscriptions depends on how you want to use Squarespace moving forward.
Note: When you cancel a website platform plan, are products in the plan are canceled.
For a domain you registered through Squarespace, you can use your domain with another site, cancel it, or transfer it to another host. For domains you purchased elsewhere and connected to your site, take them with you by disconnecting them and changing settings in your provider's account. Even after your site subscription is canceled or expires, your Member Areas subscription will still continue on the automatic payment schedule you originally selected. We'll pause all memberships to your member areas, meaning members will lose access to your content and won’t be charged for subsequent pay periods. You’ll still have access to member profiles and you’re responsible for contacting members regarding paused memberships.
If you reactivate your site subscription, all preexisting memberships are reinstated, and members are charged for any pay periods that occurred while memberships were paused.
You can cancel Member Areas at any time.
If you cancel a site subscription that has a Google Workspace subscription, you'll continue to be billed for Google Workspace through Squarespace. You can still log into your site to manage your Google Workspace account from the Google Workspace panel. Even without an active website subscription, you can still access the Email Campaigns dashboard, draft and send campaigns, and manage your Email Campaigns subscription through your expired site. You can cancel Email Campaigns at any time. Before you do so, we recommend exporting your Email Campaigns mailing lists so you can import them to another service.
After you cancel your website subscription, your Acuity subscription remains active and clients can continue booking appointments from your standalone scheduling page. You can cancel Acuity at any time.
Will my site appear in search engine search results after my subscription ends?
After your site subscription ends, search engines won't index your site anymore, because it won’t be public. If you don't move your site to another provider, it'll eventually disappear from search results. Note that this takes time, and timing can vary based on each search engine’s indexing activity. Squarespace has no control over removing your site from any search engine’s search results after you end your subscription.
If you move your site to another provider, a search engine might index the new content after the site is active.
What’s the difference between ending a subscription and deleting a site?
Canceling a subscription takes your site offline and stops your subscription payments. After your site is canceled, its content is marked for permanent deletion after 30 days.
Deleting a site immediately marks its content for permanent deletion. You can only delete a site that’s already expired or canceled.
Can I reactivate my site after I end my subscription?

Can I move a website subscription to a different site?
No. If you want to move a website subscription from one site to another, you need to end your current site subscription, and start a new one. It’s currently not possible to move a website subscription from one site to another.
