You can delete your site after canceling your subscription or when your trial expires. This guide explains how to delete a site and what happens when you delete content from Squarespace.

What happens to deleted and expired content?

There are different ways to delete your content. Before you delete any content from Squarespace, we recommend reviewing what happens to your deleted content.

Deleted sites

Deleting a site permanently removes data and content linked to your site from our systems. Only expired or canceled sites with no other active subscriptions can be deleted.

After deleting your site:

  • Your site and its content and any data related to the site or your site visitors won’t be recoverable.
  • We can't provide invoices for the deleted site.
  • You won’t be able to see the site anymore in your account dashboard, so you can’t log in to make changes or publish the site again so it can be accessible to visitors.
  • Third-party domains linked to your site will automatically disconnect. You can also disconnect domains manually before deleting the site.

Please note that to the extent necessary and permitted under applicable law, certain data may be retained to comply with legal or financial obligations, protect our and others’ rights, resolve disputes, or enforce our legal terms or policies.

Canceled subscriptions

Canceling a subscription takes your site offline and stops your subscription payments, but it doesn’t mark your site for deletion. A site is only permanently deleted if the site owner makes a delete my account request or the site owner or an admin-level contributor clicks Delete Site in the account dashboard.

Expired trial sites

When your trial site expires, your site content is no longer visible to visitors. Sites that were never a paid subscription are automatically marked for deletion after a period of inactivity. We will send an email to the trial site’s owner seven days before deleting the content, which will include links to either upgrade the trial to a paid service or reactivate the trial

If you no longer need your trial site, you can delete it from the account dashboard.

Deleted pages or posts

When you delete select content from a live site, like a page or blog post:

  • Visitors can no longer find or visit the content.
  • The deleted content moves to a trash can, where it's accessible for about 30 days if you want to recover it.
  • To permanently remove deleted items, empty the trash can.
  • When you delete a page or post, visitors will see a 404 error when they visit its URL. To prevent this from happening, set up a URL redirect or use the same URL for a replacement page or post.

Before you delete your entire site

Delete your site

Step 1 - Check your site

If you have multiple Squarespace sites in your account (including trials), confirm you’re viewing the one you want to delete.

  1. To switch to a different site, go to the Home menu, scroll down, and click your profile picture or initials.
  2. In your account dashboard, you'll see all subscriptions connected to your account.
  3. Hover over the correct site's preview image and click Go To Website.

Step 2 - Delete the site

You can delete the site from the Billing panel if the subscription has expired.

  1. Open the Billing panel.
  2. Select the website subscription, then click Delete Site. This option won't appear if the site has any active subscriptions.
  3. Click Delete Site again in the panel that opens to confirm.
  4. You'll be prompted with a final warning. Click Delete Site to permanently delete your site.
  5. You'll see a "Site Deleted" message. Visitors to this URL will also see this message.
