Managing a parked domain

Manage domains that aren't connected to websites.

Last updated December 13, 2024

If your Squarespace domain isn't connected to a Squarespace site or pointing to a website outside of Squarespace, your domain will be parked. Visitors to your parked domain see your custom domain and a minimalist background image.

This guide explains how to manage a parked domain. To learn more about registering a parked domain, visit Starting with a Squarespace domain.

Note

If you have more than one Squarespace domain, your domain may be grouped, meaning the payment information of your domains are linked. Changing the payment information of one domain affects all domains in the group.

If your domains are grouped, you'll see a message letting you know when updating the payment information of a domain. To manage the payment information of a domain separately, ungroup your domain.

Park a domain

When you register a Squarespace domain or transfer a domain into Squarespace, we add default DNS records to the domain to point it to Squarespace. With these records added, your domain is parked, and visitors to your domain will see our default parking page design.

If you move the domain to a Squarespace site or point the domain to a non-Squarespace website, your domain is no longer parked, and visiting your domain displays the website you've connected the domain to.

If your domain is parked but visitors to your domain get an error message about being unable to connect to, or reach, the server, your domain may be missing these default DNS records. To add Squarespace default records to your domain:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Click your domain.
  3. Click DNS.
  4. Click Add preset, then click Add Squarespace defaults.

If the domain you'd like to park is currently connected to a Squarespace site, you can park the domain by removing its connection.

Manage your domain

After you register your domain, you can manage the domain via your Domains dashboard. To learn more about managing your new domain, visit Your Domains dashboard.

Add a contributor or change domain ownership

You can add a contributor to, or change ownership of your parked domain at any time.

Ensure you update the domain contact information when changing domain ownership. It's important to keep your domain contact email address up to date because:

  • We send important notifications for your domain to this email address
  • We use the email address to verify domain ownership
  • Other domain providers may request this information if you transfer the domain to them

Move your domain

You can move a domain to any Squarespace site under the same account. To learn more about moving your domain, visit Moving a domain to another Squarespace site.

FAQ

Can I display my own ads on my parked domain?

No, parked domains will only display the standard minimalist background and your custom domain name. Parking pages don’t support code injection, CSS, or integrations other than Google Workspace.

Squarespace parking pages are meant to hold a spot on the internet until you're ready to build a full website. Parking pages can also be used to hold a domain for a custom email address that doesn’t need a website.

Can I connect a third-party domain to a parking page?

No, it's not possible to connect a new third-party domain to a parking page. To continue managing your domain with a different domain host while using it with Squarespace, upgrade to a full site.

Can I revert to a parking page after canceling a paid subscription or trial?

No, after you convert your parked domain to a trial or paid site, it's not possible to move back to a parking page.

Can I create a site on Squarespace version 7.0 and move my parked domain to it?

Yes, to create a site on Squarespace version 7.0 with a domain you own, visit  the 7.0 template store and create a trial site.  Then, upgrade the site to a paid subscription and move your domain to the new site.
