Accepting a contributor invitation

Log in or sign up to get access to a Squarespace account.

Last updated December 11, 2024

This guide covers what to do when someone invites you as a contributor to a Squarespace site.

Tip

You can remove yourself as a contributor at any time. To learn more, visit Removing yourself as a contributor.

Note

Squarespace domains that don't share billing information with a website have different contributor settings than those in this guide. To learn more, visit Managing domain permissions.

Step 1 - Open the contributor email

When someone invites you as a contributor, you'll receive an email invitation with the subject line "Contributor Invitation from [inviter name]." Open the email and click Accept invitation.

Step 2 - Log in or sign up

Log in or sign up using the email address you want to use to manage the site.

Tip

To switch between the existing login and account creation screens, click Create account or Log in in the top-right corner.

If you already have a Squarespace account

If you already have an account, you'll be prompted to log in. You can either enter your account email address and password, or click Apple, Facebook, or Google if you log in using a social account. If you enabled two-factor authentication, you may be prompted to complete login with a passkey or an authentication code.

If you're already logged into an existing account, click Continue with this email to accept the invitation from that account. Otherwise, click Log in with a different email.

If you don't have a Squarespace account

If you don't have a Squarespace account, sign up by clicking Create account. When you create an account, you’ll pick your login information. You can either:

  • Use an email address and password to log in. We recommend using an email address you can easily access.
  • Use your Apple, Facebook, or Google account to save time and log in with one click. You’ll be prompted to log into that account and make the connection to Squarespace.

Note

If you try to sign up with a social account and see an error that says Email address required, ensure you have an email address on file for that social account.

Troubleshooting

Error message: You already have permissions on this website

This message appears when you try to accept a contributor invitation while already logged in with an account that has permissions on the website.

If you are trying to add permissions on a different account, we recommend accepting the contributor invitation in Incognito mode. That way, you can log into the correct account after clicking Accept invitation.

Error message: This email address was not found

This message appears when the email address entered isn't part of our system. If you don't have a Squarespace account already, click Create account.

If you have a Squarespace account, check the email address for typos or errors. For more help, visit Changing or recovering your account email address.

Error message: Invalid password

This message appears when the password doesn't match our system's record for the email address. If you don't have a Squarespace account already, click Create account

If you have a Squarespace account, carefully reenter the password to avoid typos or errors. For more help, visit Resetting your Squarespace password.

Error message: Change login method (You usually log in using…)

Each account is set to log in with an email address and password, or through Apple, Facebook, or Google. If you receive this error message, you attempted to log in using the incorrect method. Try logging in the same way you signed up. You can also change how you log into Squarespace.

Error message: Invalid Invitation Code

If the invitation has already been accepted, or if the person who invited you canceled the invitation, this message will appear. Contact the inviter and ask them to remove and resend the invitation.
