You can change your Squarespace website plan and cycle at any time. This guide covers changing your plan and how often you’re billed for service (monthly or annually).
- For our current pricing, visit our Pricing page.
- To upgrade a trial site, visit Upgrading to paid service.
- For tips on the right time to upgrade, visit When to upgrade to a Commerce plan.
- To switch from a Mobile Start plan, visit Upgrading to a Mobile Start plan.
- It's not possible to move a website subscription from one site to another. However, you can cancel the site you don’t need and upgrade the one you want to use.
Before you begin
Site owners and contributors with Admin or Billing permissions can make these changes.
- You can change your plan and billing cycle at the same time in the Billing panel. Some plan changes take effect at the end of your current billing period.
- If your site is past due, update your billing credit card before changing your plan.
- Before you can downgrade your plan, you may need to disable or remove specific premium features from your site.
Domain renewal charge and notifications
To prevent service interruptions, we charge you 15 days before your domain's official renewal date. The day we charge you for your domain is your domain's charge date.
Fifteen days before your charge date, we'll send an email to the Owner and Admin domain contacts about upcoming domain renewals. This gives you a chance to update your credit card information or disable auto-renew to cancel the renewal. If the card on file is correct, no further action is necessary to proceed with the renewal.

- In the Home menu, click Settings.
- Click Billing, then click Subscriptions.

If you're on a legacy billing plan, and you have trouble changing your plan, visit Legacy website billing plans for next steps.
Plan changes and access to features
When you change your plan or billing cycle, you’ll gain or lose access to specific features. The timing of when you’ll lose or get access to features depends on the plan changes you make. Review your plan’s features before changing plans. To find when your subscriptions renew, visit Checking your billing subscriptions.
Upgrading your plan
If you change both your billing plan and cycle, the timing when you get access to features depends on the plan change you make. You’re charged the prorated difference between your old and new plan. Keep these scenarios in mind when upgrading your plan:
Plan cycle change |
Plan change takes effect |
No change |
Immediately |
Change to monthly |
At the end of the current billing cycle |
Change to annual |

Downgrading your plan
When you downgrade your plan, you’ll have access to features until the end of your current billing plan, even if you change your billing cycle. We don’t offer prorated refunds for downgrades. Here are the downgrade scenarios to keep in mind:

No change |

Change to annual |
Business or Commerce to Personal website plan
If you’re on a Business or Commerce website plan and switch to the Personal website plan, you’ll have access to premium features until the end of your current billing period. Before downgrading to the Personal plan:
- Delete any carrier calculated shipping options.
- Disable or delete some pages if your current plan has page limits.
- Disable automatic tax rates.
- Edit your shipping options and remove shipping zones by city.
- Remove contributors if you have more than two. Personal plans have a limit of two contributors for a site, including the site owner.
You can switch back to a Business or Commerce plan at any time to regain full access to these features.
PayPal
If you use PayPal as a payment processor and downgrade from a Commerce plan to one that charges transaction fees, you may need to reset your PayPal connection to continue offering it at checkout.
Changing only your billing cycle
Your plan features don’t change when you only change your billing cycle. If you only change your billing cycle, your renewal date moves depending on the cycle you choose.

Review your renewal status
When you change your billing plan or cycle, your subscription will be set to renew automatically. If you don’t want your subscription to renew, uncheck Auto-renew every time you change your plan.
To review your site's renewal status:
- In the Home menu, click Settings.
- Click Billing.
- Under Subscriptions, click Website or Store, depending on your plan.
- Your next renewal/billing date is listed beside Payment due.
- At the bottom of the panel, switch the Renew automatically toggle off.
Change your billing date
To change your site's billing date without changing your billing cycle, you can disable auto-renew and reactivate the site on the day you'd like to be charged.
Keep in mind that turning off auto-renew will cause your site to expire on the Payment due date, which means that your site will be taken offline until you reactivate it.
What happens to your Squarespace Domain
For Squarespace domains you purchased
If you purchased a Squarespace Domain and switched from annual to monthly, the domain will stay on its own annual billing cycle. You can review your domain's charge date in the Domains panel.
For your free Squarespace Domain
If you registered a legacy Squarespace Domain and switch to monthly billing, check Renew my domain to keep the domain registered. It'll convert to a paid domain, renewing for $20 annually. After you renew the domain, it can't be made free again.
If you don't want to keep the domain, leave Renew my domain unchecked when you switch to monthly billing. The domain will expire at the end of its current billing cycle.
