Displaying social icons

You can display social icons from more than 30 services on your site. Social icons are available on every template, either through built-in social icons or the Social Links Block. Displaying social icons is a great way to encourage visitors to follow and connect with you.

Templates with built-in social icons

The table below shows which templates support built-in social icons and where they display. After connecting your accounts, social icons will display automatically in these templates. Templates are grouped by family.

Display varies by template. In some cases you may need to enable them in Site Styles. For more help, visit your template's guide.

Tip: In some templates, the demo content also includes a Social Link Block.

What if my template doesn't have built-in icons?

If your template doesn’t have built-in social icons, use the Social Links Block. It’s common to place the Social Links Block in the footer or header.

For example, Bedford doesn't have built-in social icons, but you can add them to your site by placing a Social Links Block in the footer.

Some templates, like Galapagos, have removable Social Links Blocks as part of their demo content. When you connect a social account, the icons will appear in the the Social Links Block if you haven't removed the block.

Add social icons

Repeat these steps for each social icon you want to add to your site:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Connected Accounts.
  2. Click Connect Account to open the Connected Accounts menu and select the account to add.
  3. In the Connected Accounts menu, select the account to add.
  4. Follow the steps to verify your account and allow Squarespace to access your information. Not all services require this step.
  5. Follow the steps to complete your information. These vary for each service. For specific instructions, visit the guides below.
  6. Check Show Social Icon. This ensures the icon appears in built-in social icons and Social Links Blocks.
  7. Click Save. The connected account should appear in the Connected Accounts panel.

Reorder social icons

To change the order in which the icons display:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Connected Accounts.
  2. Click and drag the accounts in the panel to rearrange them.

Hide social icons

Hide all built-in icons

You can hide built-in social icons in Site Styles in most templates:

  3. Click Save.

Built-in social icons can't be hidden in the Flatiron or Native templates.

Hide all Social Links Block icons

To hide all social icons that display in a Social Links Block, delete the block.

Hide some icons

To hide some icons, whether they're built-in or display in the Social Links Block, follow these steps for each icon you want to hide.

  1. In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Connected Accounts.
  2. Click on the icon you want to hide.
  3. Uncheck Show Social Icon.
  4. Click Save.

Style social icons

You can style the icons in Site Styles.

  1. In the Home Menu, click Design, and then click Site Styles.
  2. Click on the social icons in the site preview.
  3. Change the style of the icons using the style tweaks that appear.
  4. Click Save.

The style tweaks for built-in social icons vary by template. In all templates you can change the color, size, and style. Some templates have additional options, which may include:

Social Icon Style

Change the shape of the social icons. Options usually include:

  • Round
  • Square
  • Normal - The default shape of the service's branding. For example, the Facebook icon will be in the shape of an "f."
Color Overlay / Alternate Color Choose a second color for display on banners
Standard Color Use the default color of the service's branding.
Tip: For a list of your template's options, visit its Site Styles tweaks guide.

Social icons on Cover Pages

Cover Pages are styled independently of a site's template. To add social icons to a Cover Page:

  1. Ensure all services are connected in Connected Accounts.
  2. In the Home Menu, click Pages, and then click your Cover Page.
  3. Click Branding & Text.
  4. Check Display Social Icons.

Are my icons built-in?

To figure out if social icons displaying on your site are built-in or a Social Links Block, log into your site and hover over the block.

Built-in social icons show a Connected Accounts annotation:

A Connected Accounts annotation appears when hovering over built-in icons.

If an annotation doesn't appear, it's probably a Social Links Block. You can confirm this by clicking Edit to open the page or post editor, then hovering over the links. A Social Links annotation appears:
