US sales tax and Squarespace billing

Review the list of cities and states where we collect sales tax on subscriptions.

It's a legal requirement for Squarespace to collect sales tax in certain areas. This guide explains our United States sales tax policies and how to apply for an exemption.

To review our non-US resident tax policies, visit the guides below:

Before you begin

  • For help setting tax rules for your online store, visit Setting up automatic tax rates in the US.
  • Per our Terms of Service, Squarespace doesn't provide advice or recommendations regarding laws applicable to your site or business. If you have questions about collecting taxes, you can consult with a tax advisor.

Former Google Domains users

If your Google Domains subscription had a tax exemption, you'll need to request an exemption again from Squarespace before your domain renews. Your exemption status didn’t migrate with your domain.

US sales tax locations and exemption information

We determine your tax location by the billing address entered with your payment method information. If you've received an email about a sales tax charge, review your billing information to ensure that it's correct.

If you have more questions about taxes, we suggest speaking with a tax advisor.

Below is a list of cities and states where we apply taxes to applicable subscriptions. If your business is exempt from US sales tax, and your site is active on a billing plan, submit an exemption request here. Ensure you attach the appropriate sales tax exemption forms for your location and business, and that they are dated within a year of the time we receive them. The one-year timeframe doesn't apply if your state provides an exemption certificate that doesn't need to be filled out.

If you need Squarespace’s US address when completing a tax form, it's:

225 Varick Street, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10014.

Tip

If you're submitting an exemption request for multiple sites, you don't need to submit a request for each site. You can list all the sites in the same request.

Find the sales tax exemption form on your city or state's tax authority website:

After our billing specialists review your information, we’ll respond to your exemption request. We can’t apply tax exemptions to trial or expired sites.

If you change your billing information in the future, you’ll need to submit another exemption request.
