Content metadata

Information stored by your content, like publication date or author name, which is sometimes displayed on the content itself.

Last updated November 1, 2023

Metadata is information about your content, like its name or publication date, that’s stored within the content itself.

Metadata gives your content more context and helps visitors use your site more effectively. For example, blog posts can display metadata such as author names, categories, and tags. Many types of metadata are clickable. For example, clicking on an author name takes you to a filtered page of posts by that author.

This guide provides an overview of metadata used in Squarespace.

Tip

This guide focuses on metadata that displays on a page. To add information to your site for SEO, visit Increasing your site’s visibility to search engines. To import image metadata, visit Importing image metadata.

Types of metadata

The following metadata can display on these collection pages depending on your site's settings:

  • Blog pages - Date, author name, location, tags, categories, source URL, comment links
  • Events pages - Date, tags, categories, location
  • Store pages - Tags, categories
  • Videos pages - Date, categories
  • Album pages - Artist name, share link
  • Blog pages - Date, author name, location, tags, categories, likes, source URL, share and comment links
  • Events pages - Date, tags, categories, location, share link
  • Store pages - Tags, categories, share link or buttons

Add metadata in collection item settings, such as blog post settings.

Even when metadata doesn't display on the page or item, it will appear in your site’s built-in search. This is a great way to help visitors find relevant content.

Display options and styling

Metadata display and styling options depend on your site's version.

You can find display and color options in the section styles for collection pages and items. When styling metadata color, tweaks often include Meta or the specific type of metadata in their name. Keep in mind, different layouts may have different tweaks.

To style metadata font, open site styles, click Fonts, then click Miscellaneous.

Every template has its own style tweaks and options. Explore your style options to see which tweaks affect your metadata. Tweaks often include Meta. There may also be specific tweaks for certain types of metadata, like author name, date, and share buttons.

Not all templates display all types of metadata. For example, blog post author names are always hidden in these templates:

  • Avenue
  • Ishimoto
  • Wells

Visit our template guides for more details about your template’s style options.

Metadata and summary blocks

As an alternative to how your collection pages displays metadata, you can use a summary block on a layout page.

Summary blocks present your content, like blog posts, in magazine-style layouts. You can choose up to two types of metadata with each item. You can also create filters for categories and tags.
