Troubleshooting Facebook sharing issues

Steps to resolve common Facebook sharing issues and errors.

Last updated March 1, 2023

Use this guide to troubleshoot common issues with connecting Facebook to your site or sharing content on Facebook.

Facebook is sharing the wrong image or content

This is most likely happening for one of the following reasons:

The social sharing logo isn't the image Facebook uses

Depending on the type of content you're sharing, Facebook will use your social sharing logo, item featured image, or another image. Knowing which images display in social posts helps you determine if Facebook is sharing the correct image or using an outdated, cached version.

The image is smaller than 200px x 200px

If the image is too small, Facebook may show a different image or post your content without an image.

Follow our 2500-pixel recommendation to ensure your images will work for Facebook posts.

Facebook doesn’t have the most updated information

If the image accompanying your Facebook posts from Squarespace doesn't match what it should be, you can usually resolve this with Facebook's debugger tool. This prompts Facebook to refresh what it reads from your site and pull in the most updated content.

Fix the issue with Facebook's debugger tool

Note

If you have a site-wide password or a page password on your homepage, remove it for this process. You can re-add it after the correct image appears.

  1. Open Facebook's debugger tool.
  2. Add the URL you want to share and click Debug. If you have multiple custom domains, use your primary domain.
  3. Scroll down to Link Preview and check the image.
  4. If you don't see the correct image, scroll up and click Scrape Again. You might need to do this a few times.
  5. Check the image again.

After you've used the debugger tool, push the content to Facebook again. The Facebook debugger tool doesn't update content previously pushed to Facebook, so we recommend re-posting and re-sharing content as needed to display the correct content and image.

If the debugger tool displays a message listing Warnings that should be fixed, this is normal; learn more below.

Facebook needs to clear its cache

After the debugger scrapes your URL, you'll see a section titled Based on the raw tags, we constructed the following Open Graph properties. This breaks down everything that Facebook is currently pulling from your website. If the content is correct but doesn't match what's actually being shared, you may need to wait for Facebook to clear its cache or contact Facebook for help.

I want to push content to my Facebook Profile

Facebook doesn't allow third-party tools like Squarespace to share content with personal Facebook Profiles on someone's behalf. Instead, you can push Squarespace content to a connected Facebook Page (typically used for businesses), or you can share links manually in a Facebook post.

Pushed content isn't showing up on my Facebook Page

If you're having trouble pushing content to a Page, you may still need to set a Push Target in your Facebook Connected Accounts settings.

Resolve this issue with the following steps:

  1. Open the Connected Accounts panel.
  2. Click your Facebook account.
  3. Ensure Show Push Option is clicked.
  4. In the Push Target drop-down menu, select a Facebook Page where you'd like to post.
  5. Click Save.

All content you share going forward will post to this Facebook Page. This change isn't retroactive.

If your content still isn't showing up on Facebook, check the following:

If everything appears to be normal, disconnecting and reconnecting your Facebook account in your Connected Accounts settings can resolve the issue.

My Facebook page is missing from the Push Target menu

This is probably happening because Squarespace doesn't have permission to post content to your Facebook page.

You can fix this by giving Squarespace permission to post content:

  1. Log into your Facebook account.
  2. Go to Business Integrations in your account settings.
  3. Click Squarespace.
  4. Change your settings to allow Facebook to manage your Pages and publish as Pages you manage.
  5. Click Save.

If you're still not seeing your account, keep in mind that our system limits the Push Target drop-down menu to 25 accounts. You may need to limit the number of accounts associated with your Facebook login details to get a specific account to show.

My Facebook account disconnected

This usually happens when you make changes to your Facebook account, like changing your password or permission settings.

If your Facebook account is disconnected, you can resolve the issue by disconnecting and reconnecting your account:

  1. Log out of Facebook.
  2. Log into your Squarespace site.
  3. Open the Connected Accounts panel.
  4. Click your Facebook account.
  5. Click Disconnect, then click Confirm.
  6. Click Connect Account.
  7. Choose Facebook from the Social Accounts menu, and log in using your Facebook username and password.
  8. Allow Squarespace to make changes to the connected account.

Tip

To push content to Facebook immediately, you can share your blog post URL manually.

Facebook is sharing demo text

Your Facebook posts may include text like “lorem ipsum” if demo content still appears somewhere in your live template.

To prevent this from happening, ensure all demo content is removed from your sidebars, footers, and layout page content.

My built-in domain shows in a Facebook post

If your built-in Squarespace domain (yourname.squarespace.com) appears at the bottom of a Facebook post instead of a custom domain (yourname.com), it might be because it's set as your primary domain.

To check this, open the Domains panel and look for a Primary label. If it appears next to your built-in domain, change it to your custom domain. Then delete the Facebook post and share your content again.

If this doesn't resolve the issue, use Facebook's debugger tool, and then re-post the content. This prompts Facebook to refresh what it reads from your site and pull in the most up-to-date content.

If your site doesn't have a custom domain yet, you can register one with Squarespace or connect a domain purchased elsewhere.

Facebook is blocking my domain or URL

If you think Facebook is mistakenly blocking your site or domain, you can report this to Facebook.

Facebook debugger displays "Warnings that should be fixed"

When using the Facebook debugger tool, you may see a message listing Warnings that should be fixed. This is normal, and doesn't mean there's an issue with your site or your ability to share content on Facebook. The Facebook debugger tool is designed to analyze websites built from scratch, rather than CMS platforms like Squarespace. Because of this, the debugger tool can return false errors.
