Renaming a page

Every page in your Squarespace site has a navigation title and page title. You can edit these titles in Page Settings.

Best practices

If a page title needs more than a few words, you might want to give it a shorter navigation title. Navigation titles create links in your navigation menus. Since space in these menus is limited, it's best to keep titles concise.

For example, you may have a page titled "About Our Team." This is how you want that page to appear in search results and on the page itself. However, "About Our Team" might be too long to fit in a menu, especially if you have a lot of pages. Shortening the navigation title to "About" allows all pages to fit.

Avoid using angle brackets around your text in the navigation title or page title, like this: <Page title>. Angle brackets used this way may make parts of your title invisible or cause other issues, as text placed in angle brackets renders as code.

Change a navigation title

Navigation titles represent each page in your navigation menus. They also appear in the Pages panel when you're logged into your site. Keeping navigation titles short saves space and makes your site easier to navigate.

To edit a navigation title, follow these steps:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the page title.
  3. Click the next to the title.
  4. Enter a new title under Navigation Title. Navigation titles must be 100 characters or fewer.
  5. Click Save.

Change a page title

Page titles appear in browser address bars and may appear in search engine results. In some templates, a page title can display on the page itself.

Tip: If you edit your navigation title, the page title will automatically change to match it. To edit both titles separately, edit the navigation title first and then the page title before saving your changes.

To edit a page title, follow these steps:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the page title.
  3. Click the next to the title.
  4. Enter a new title under Page Title. Page titles must be 100 characters or fewer.
  5. Click Save.

How templates use page titles

For all templates, page titles will appear in search engine results. In some templates, page titles are also built into the site design.

Here's how page titles display for each template. For Avenue and the York family, the navigation title also displays.

Except where noted, the display is the same on desktop and mobile. Templates are grouped by family.

Tip: Page titles often display with the page description.
