Adding links to your navigation

When building your site navigation, use the Link option in the pages menu to link to:

Tip: To add links to pages on your site, add the pages to your navigation instead.

To add a link to your navigation:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click the + icon next to the section where you want to add a link.
  3. In the Create New Page menu, select Link.
  4. In the link editor, enter the link text under Link Title.
  5. Enter a URL under Link, or click the gear icon to link to a category or tagemail address, phone number, or file.

To add a link to a folder, click and drag it into the folder, or click Add page under the folder to create a new one.

Note: Adding navigation links is only possible in the iOS version of the Squarespace App.
  1. Tap the Pages icon.
  2. Tap Add at the bottom of the navigation section where you want to add the link.
  3. Tap Link.
  4. Under Link Title, enter the link text.
  5. Tap Link, then choose your link type. Link to an existing page, enter an external link, or upload a file from your device.

Where you add your link in the Pages panel affects where it appears on your site. To learn more about each navigation section, visit Understanding the Pages panel.

Link to a web address

Use the web address option when you want to link to external sites or content, such as the website for a friend's business or a third-party service you use with your site.

To link to an external URL:

  1. After adding the link, click the gear icon.
  2. Click Web Address in the link editor.
  3. Enter a site URL under Link.
  4. Switch the Open in New Window toggle on to have the link open in a new tab.
  5. Click Save in the link editor, then click Save again to add the link to your navigation.

In some cases, you may want to use the web address option to link to content on your own site that you can't otherwise link to, such as:

Link to a page on your site

To link to a page on your site, add it to your navigation. Because adding a page automatically adds a link to that page in your site's navigation, you don't need to create a separate link for each page. If a page's link isn't appearing on your site, you may need to enable it or move it out of the Not Linked section.

To link to a collection filtered by categories or tags, use the page option in the link editor:

  1. After adding the link, click the gear icon.
  2. Click Page in the link editor.
  3. Click into Search to open a menu of all the pages on your site.
  4. Select the collection with the category or tag you want to link.
  5. Select the category or tag from the drop-down menu under Categories or TagsTo learn more, visit Adding links to categories or tags.
  6. Click Save in the link editor, then click Save again to add the link to your navigation.

Link to an email address

Use the email option to encourage visitors to email you. When a visitor clicks the link, it opens a blank email in their default email service and automatically populates it with your information.

To link to an email address:

  1. After adding the link, click the gear icon.
  2. Click Email in the link editor.
  3. Under To, enter the email address you want visitors to send their message to.
  4. Under Subject, enter a subject to populate the email's subject line.
  5. You can also enter body text, a cc email address, and a bcc email address if you want. Keep in mind visitors who click the email link can edit any populated fields before sending an email.
  6. Click Save in the link editor, then click Save again to add the link to your navigation.

Link to a phone number

Use the phone option to encourage visitors to call you. When a visitor taps the link from a smartphone, it prompts them to call the number.

To link to a phone number:

  1. After adding the link, click the gear icon.
  2. Click Phone in the link editor.
  3. Under Phone Number, enter your phone number, including country code and area code, if applicable.
  4. Click Save in the link editor, then click Save again to add the link to your navigation.

Link to a file

Use the file option to upload and link to files, like .pdf menus or audio files. Depending on the file type, uploaded files will download automatically or open in new tabs, where visitors can view them or save them to their computer.

To link to a file:

  1. After adding the link, click the gear icon.
  2. Click File in the link editor.
  3. Click Upload File to select a file from your computer. You can also search for and select a previously uploaded file. A checkmark appears beside the selected file.
  4. Click Save in the link editor, then click Save again to add the link to your navigation.

Remove the link

To remove a link from your navigation:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the link and click the gear icon.
  3. Click Delete Link, then click Delete to confirm.
