Managing donations

Last updated January 17, 2025

All donations you receive through donation blocks appear in the donations panel. From here, you can review the contributions and revenue you’ve collected. This guide covers the key tasks you may want to take to manage your donations and donors.

Accessing this feature

Donation blocks are available in the Basic, Core, Plus, Advanced, Business, Commerce Basic, and Commerce Advanced plans. To learn more, visit Choosing the right Squarespace plan.

View donations

To view donations:

  1. Open the Donations dashboard, where you can review total contributions and revenue. To compare contribution revenue by donation fund, click Funds.
  2. Click View all under Contributions to open the Contributions panel, which displays a list of individual contributions.
  3. Click Export CSV to export donations to a .csv file.
  4. Click a contribution to view its details.

The Contributions panel displays the 100 most recent donations. To view older donations, scroll to the bottom of the panel and older donations will load automatically.

Note

Revenue displayed here only includes donations made through the new donation block. Revenue from the original block will appear in your bank account and in your site's Sales analytics.

Contribution summary

The contribution summary displays:

  • The contribution date and time
  • Donor contact information, billing address, and payment details
  • The contribution amount

To view your donor’s profile, click View profile. To view your donor’s full payment details and issue a refund, click View payment.

Note

Credit card details don't display in the summary. To view card details like the last four digits, card type, or expiration date, click View in Stripe or View in PayPal.

View donors

To view and manage donors:

  1. Open the Lists & Segments panel.
  2. Click Donors.
  3. Search for donors by name or email address, or use filters to narrow the list.
  4. Click a donor to open their donor profile.

You can see the date of a donor’s first donation, their donation history and contact information, and if they're subscribed to any of your Email Campaigns mailing lists.

Refund a donation

You can refund donations from your Squarespace Payments, Stripe, or PayPal account.

  1. Open the Contributions panel.
  2. Click the donation you want to refund.
  3. Click View payment.

The steps to issue a refund depend on your payment processor:

  • Squarespace Payments - Click Issue refund to issue a full or partial refund
  • Stripe - Click Refund Payment and select a full or partial refund
  • PayPal - Follow these steps to issue a full or partial refund

The refunded donation still appears in the Donations panel. It's not possible to remove refunded donations at this time. Refunding a donation doesn’t cancel future recurring donations. Follow the steps below to cancel upcoming renewals.

Note

Cancel a recurring donation

To view and cancel a recurring donation:

  1. In a donor's profile, click Recurring, then click General fund.
  2. The general fund panel displays the date of the next renewal, the renewal amount, the renewal frequency, and total payments.
  3. To cancel upcoming donation renewals, click Cancel recurring donation, then click Confirm.

This cancels all future donation renewals.

Tip

All recurring donations are linked to the General fund. It’s not possible to change this.

Customize the donation confirmation email

After making a donation, donors receive a confirmation email. To customize this email, visit Customer email notifications.

Manage donation funds

To add multiple donation funds and manage fund settings, open the donations panel and click Funds. From here, you can add new funds, and edit existing fund settings, like the fund name, suggested donation amounts, and recurring donation settings. For more information, visit Donation funds.

Enable customer accounts

To accept recurring donations, you must enable customer accounts. All recurring donors need to create an account at the time of their first donation, if they don't already have one.

Regardless of the kind of donations you accept, you may want to enable customer accounts to help donors checkout faster. When a donor creates an account, they can securely save their payment methods, shipping addresses, shopping carts, and order information. Donors with an account will display a check in the Accounts column of the Contacts panel.

You're responsible for helping your donors with any issues they may have when accessing their customer accounts. Learn more our best practices for helping your members in the Help your account holders section of our customer accounts guide.
