Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a new and improving technology that imitates human intelligence in computer systems to perform tasks or solve problems. With Design Intelligence, Squarespace's content-generating AI features, you can enter prompts or text you’ve already written and the AI will help you create a first draft of text content for your website.

Read this guide for an overview of best practices when using Squarespace AI.

Best practices

Follow these best practices to ensure best results when using Squarespace AI to generate content:

  • Ensure you carefully review all content generated by Squarespace AI. Because the content is created by a machine, it may not always be accurate, appropriate, or right for your needs.
  • You shouldn’t publish any text generated by Squarespace AI on your site that you wouldn’t have written yourself.
  • The more detailed your prompt, the more detailed the generated text may be. If text generated is too vague or generic, try being more specific in your prompts.
  • Squarespace AI may generate the same or similar content for you that it generates on another user’s site, depending on what prompts you use. You should always edit the generated text to add your voice or details unique to you and your site.
  • You are responsible for your use of Squarespace AI and any content you use or publish.

Generate text with Squarespace AI

Use Squarespace AI in supported text areas to generate text from prompts or rewrite text you've already written. This is a great way to get a first draft of copy on the page, or to get ideas about how to improve copy you've already written.

Supported text areas

Squarespace AI is available to use in the following text areas on a computer:

Generate text from prompts

To generate text from prompts:

  1. Click into a supported text area, then click the three circles icon in the text toolbar.
  2. In the AI prompt field that appears, enter your prompt, or click one of the pre-built prompt starters like ParagraphSales Pitch, or Blurb, then enter your topic.
  3. Click Write. The time it takes for Squarespace AI to generate your text will vary depending on your prompt.
  4. When the text is generated, read over it to ensure it’s what you had in mind for your first draft. If not, rewrite your prompt and click Write again.
  5. Next, follow our best practices to review and edit the text.

Rewrite existing text

To rewrite text you've already written and added to your site:

  1. Click into a supported text area, highlight the text you want to edit, and click the three circles icon in the text toolbar.
  2. Click SimplifyShorten, or Lengthen.
  3. Click Write. If Write is grayed out and a negative number displays next to it, the amount of text you've highlighted is over the character limit. Highlight less text and try again.
  4. After the text is rewritten, read over it to ensure it’s what you had in mind for your draft. If not, click into the text area and click undo to return to your original text and try again.
  5. When you’re happy with the rewritten text, follow our best practices to review and edit it.

Create a Brand Identity

To create a Brand Identity that improves the quality and consistency of generated text on your site:

  1. Click into a supported text area, then click the three circles icon in the text toolbar.
  2. Click the i icon to open the Brand Identity window.
  3. Type in a description of your site or business, then choose a personality to decide the tone of generated text. If you choose the custom personality, you'll type another description.
  4. You can review an example of your generated text on the right side of the window. When you're done, click Save.

Generate text and images during site creation

When creating a new site with Squarespace Blueprint AI, you'll be given the option to write a prompt that Squarespace AI will use to generate images and text for your homepage.

When prompted, write a description of your site and choose a writing style, then click Finish. Squarespace AI will generate text and images based on what you wrote and the style you chose.

After the text is generated, follow our best practices to review and edit it.

Add a stock background

When adding a background image to a page section, you can choose from a curated selection of AI-generated images, patterns, or gradients.

To add a stock background:

  1. Click Edit on the page, then click Edit Section on the section where you want to add the background.
  2. Click Background.
  3. Click +, then click Browse Backgrounds.
  4. Under Stock Backgrounds, click ImagesPatterns, or Gradients.
