Accepting Afterpay or Clearpay

Connect Afterpay or Clearpay so your customers can shop now and pay later in installments.

Last updated January 27, 2025

Afterpay and Clearpay are payment methods you can connect to your Squarespace store so your customers can pay for products in installments, with zero percent interest. In the United Kingdom, Afterpay is called Clearpay.

Afterpay and Clearpay act as lenders. When a customer pays, you receive the full amount upfront, and your customer reimburses Afterpay or Clearpay in four installments over the next eight weeks.

Accessing this feature

Enabling Afterpay or Clearpay adds it as a payment option for all physical products in your store. It’s not available for Digital products, download products, service products, subscriptions, or Acuity. To learn how Afterpay can help grow your business, visit our Afterpay partnership site.

Note

Afterpay and Clearpay’s features and functionality are the same. However, we note any other differences in this guide, like processing fees and spending limits.

Eligibility

To use Afterpay or Clearpay as a payment method in Squarespace, you need to meet these requirements:

  • To use Afterpay, you need to be located in the United States, Canada (in any province except Quebec, where Afterpay isn't supported), New Zealand, or Australia
  • To use Clearpay, you need to be located in the United Kingdom

For both Afterpay and Clearpay, you’ll also need to:

  • Connect Squarespace Payments as a payment solution or Stripe as a payment processor.
  • If you use Squarespace Payments, you need to be on the Basic, Core, Plus, Advanced, Personal, Business, Commerce Basic, or Commerce Advanced plan.
  • If you use Stripe, you need to be on the Basic, Core, Plus, Advanced, Business, Commerce Basic, or Commerce Advanced plan. To learn more, visit Choosing the right Squarespace plan
  • Sell physical products. If you have service or download products in your cart, Afterpay and Clearpay won't appear at checkout.

Note

Your store's currency must match the local currency for the country you chose in your Stripe account. For example, if you're a merchant with a Canadian Stripe account and you set your store's currency to USD, it's not possible to use Afterpay.

Accessing this feature

We’ll be rolling out Squarespace Payments to more countries soon. Review this availability guide to check if Squarespace Payments is available in your area.

To successfully enable this feature, you need to also meet Stripe's eligibility requirements. Stripe ultimately determines your eligibility, not Squarespace, Afterpay or Clearpay. The biggest factor affecting your eligibility is the merchant category code (or MCC) associated with your Stripe account. Only Stripe can change this code. If you have questions about your eligibility, contact Stripe.

Your customer’s payment plan is managed entirely by Afterpay or Clearpay, including late payments and delinquency.

Note

If your customer's transaction doesn't complete, Stripe may mark it Uncaptured in your Stripe dashboard. To fix this issue, visit Failed customer payments.

Spending limit by country

If the order total is less than one dollar, or over the spending limit for the customer’s country, Afterpay or Clearpay won’t appear as a payment option at checkout.

Refunds

When you cancel or refund an order, the payment is returned to Afterpay or Clearpay. From there, they refund the customer’s down payment, and any installments they’ve made so far. If you issue a partial refund, the customer’s payment plan changes to reflect the new outstanding balance. Afterpay and Clearpay’s transaction fees are nonrefundable.
