Adding DNS records to your domain

Add custom DNS records to connect your site to the third-party tools you use, like Google Site Verification or Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

Last updated January 22, 2025

DNS records, also called resource records, contain information about your domain that helps connect people to your website or email address. DNS records can also improve website security and authenticate domain name ownership.

If you use a third-party service that needs access to your domain, you'll need to update your domain's DNS records. You can update your DNS records in Squarespace if either of these is true:

  • You have a Squarespace-managed domain
  • You connected a third-party domain to a Squarespace site via Nameserver Connect

If your third-party domain is connected via DNS Connect, edit your DNS settings in your third-party domain provider account instead of following this guide.

There are only a few reasons for editing DNS records, such as forwarding your domain, setting up a third-party email or fixing a domain that's no longer connecting. To move your domain or manage its privacy settings, visit Other ways to manage your domain.

Note

Our scope of support for DNS records is limited. We can help with showing you where to add records to your DNS settings. We can’t provide technical advice about DNS records or information about how DNS records work with other services. If you need more help, you can get peer-to-peer help in the Domains section of the Squarespace Forum or contact the service you're trying to connect, using our sample message.

Open your domain's DNS settings

To access your domain's DNS settings:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Click the domain name. If you have multiple Squarespace domains, you'll manage their DNS records separately.
  3. Click DNS Settings.

Tip

If you don’t see the option to edit your DNS settings in the Domains panel, it means your domain is connected via DNS Connect, and you'll edit your DNS records on your domain provider’s end.

Add a custom TTL

The Time To Live (TTL) value for a DNS record controls how long that record stays cached before refreshing. All custom records have a 4-hour TTL by default, but you can change that if you have specific needs for that record.

When editing a record, click the drop-down labeled TTL. A set of preset values appears along with the option to create a custom value. Enter the custom value as seconds. This field has a max value of 2147483648 seconds.

Delete DNS records

To delete a DNS record:

  1. Open your domains dashboard.
  2. Click the domain name. If you have multiple Squarespace domains, you'll manage their DNS records separately.
  3. Click DNS, and then click DNS Settings.
  4. Scroll down to Custom Records.
  5. Review your DNS records.
  6. Hover over the record you want to delete, and click the red trash can.
  7. Click Save to delete a DNS record from your settings. It can take 24 to 72 hours for the changes to update.
