Setting up sender details

Create and verify your sender email address and domain.

Last updated December 30, 2024

Your sender details are the email address and name that appear to your subscribers in the "From:" line of the email. Before you send your first email campaign, follow the steps in this guide to set up sender details.

Before you begin

  • Major email providers, like Google, have strict authentication protocols that restrict delivery of bulk emails sent by free email services, like Gmail. This helps prevent spam and keeps user accounts secure. We strongly recommend using a custom domain email, like with Google Workspace, for your sender details to ensure your campaigns reach your subscribers and aren’t flagged as spam.
  • Ensure you use accurate information. Including misleading information in your campaigns may violate legal requirements, such as CAN-SPAM.
  • You can create up to ten sets of sender details, but you can only send from one at a time.
  • If you have multiple sender details, the last address you added and verified is generally the default sender details when you create a campaign.

About verifying

Verifying your email address and domain confirms you have a valid email address that you have permission to send emails from. These steps are important for helping you avoid spam filters.

  • Verifying email - For the best results, use a custom email, which is an email connected to a domain you own, such as matt@mattsbakedgoods.com.
  • Verifying a domain - If you bought your email's domain from a third party, verify the domain. If you registered the domain through Squarespace, it's automatically verified.

Note

Due to inbox provider limitations, sender details can't use some free email addresses.

Step 1 - Create sender details

To set up sender details:

  1. Open the Email Campaign settings panel.
  2. Click Sender Details.
  3. Click Add Sender.
  4. Enter a sender name. This name is public and visible to people who receive your campaigns. Review the screenshot below for an example.
  5. Add the email address you want your campaigns to send from. If you use a Gmail address, Squarespace generates a unique “From:” address to help prevent delivery issues, but we strongly recommend using a custom domain email address for best results. Some free email providers aren't supported.
  6. Click Next.

Step 2 - Verify your email address

You'll be prompted to verify your email address. A verification email is automatically sent to the email address you added in the previous step.

Open your email and copy the code.

In the sender details setup window, enter the code, then click Next.

  • If you don't want to enter this now, click Skip. To enter it later, find your sender details, then click Verify email.
  • If the verification email doesn't appear in your inbox, check your spam folder and look for an email from no-reply@squarespace.com.

Step 3 - Verify your domain

If you purchased your email's domain from a third-party provider, you'll be prompted to verify your domain. For help, visit Verifying third-party domains for Email Campaigns.

  • Squarespace domains are automatically verified. If your Squarespace domain displays a failed verification after you create sender details, delete the sender details and create them again.
  • To verify a Squarespace domain that's connected to a different site, verify it on that site first, or add it as a third-party domain.
  • Keep in mind, if your domain has a DMARC policy set to p=reject, you can't use the sender details until after you verify the domain. If you're not sure about your domain's DMARC policies, contact your domain provider.
  • You won't be prompted to verify your domain if you're using a free email service.

Tip

If you don't want to enter this now, click I'll Do This Later. To enter it later, find your sender details, then click Verify Domain.

Automatic domain verification

Domains that are registered through or managed by Squarespace verify automatically, which means you don't have to manually update their DNS settings.

If you don't have a domain yet, we recommend these steps for the most seamless experience:

  1. Register your new domain through Squarespace.
  2. Set up a custom email address for that domain with Google Workspace.
  3. Create your sender details, then verify your email.

If you already have a domain you registered through another provider, you can transfer it to Squarespace to have it verify automatically. Note that domains can take up to 15 days to transfer.

Mailing address

The address that displays at the bottom of every campaign isn't part of your sender details. You'll add it when sending your campaign.

Free email services

We strongly recommend using a custom email, as strict authentication measures from major free email providers like Google can affect the deliverability of campaigns sent from free email services.

Error message: Emails from [domain] will be sent to spam. To ensure delivery, emails will be sent from [Sender details name] [Squarespace-generated email address]

If you use a free email address (like Gmail) and you have an unverified domain, Squarespace will generate a custom “From:” address using sqspmail.com.

For example, if your sender details email address is yourname@gmail.com, Squarespace will generate an address like yourname.gmail.com@abc123.sqspmail.com to appear in the "From:" field. This address is visible to your subscribers and helps prevent bounced emails and other issues with delivery.

Error message: You cannot use sender details with a [provider] email address

Some free email addresses are almost always rejected by inboxes. This error appears if you try to set up sender details with one of them.

We regularly update our list of email providers to ensure sender details work as intended. The below list is not all encompassing, but some email addresses you can't use include ones that end in the following domains or their associated subdomains:

  • aol.com
  • centurylink.net
  • icloud.com
  • mac.com
  • me.com
  • sqspmail.com
  • squarespace.com
  • squarespace-mail.com
  • yahoo.com

Edit sender details

To edit the name that appears with sender details:

  1. Open the Email Campaign settings panel.
  2. Under Sender Details find the details you want to edit, click ... in the top-right corner, then click Edit.
  3. Edit the name, then click Save.

It's not possible to edit the email address on sender details, as you need to go through the verification process for each email individually. Create new sender details instead.

Delete sender details

To delete sender details:

  1. Open the Email Campaign settings panel.
  2. Under Sender Details, find the details you want to delete and click ... in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Delete, then click Delete again to confirm.
