Answers to common questions about accepting payments with Stripe.

Stripe is one of Squarespace Commerce’s supported payment processors. Here are some frequently asked questions about Stripe.

Getting started

How do I get started with Stripe?

Connect your Commerce store to a Stripe account in the Store payments panel. To learn more, visit Accepting credit cards with Stripe.

Who do I contact for support?

If you have questions about connecting Stripe or processing orders through Squarespace, you can open a ticket.

For help with other questions about Stripe, including bank transfers, declined charges or prohibited products, contact Stripe or visit their documentation.

Do I need a Stripe account to use Commerce?

No. You can connect a PayPal Business account and let customers check out using PayPal only.

Can I connect Stripe to my trial site?

You can connect Stripe to a trial site, but you can only complete test orders.

Is Stripe supported in my country?

Are there limits to what I can sell with Stripe?

Yes. Squarespace and Stripe have separate restrictions on what you can sell through our platform. Ensure that you’re not selling any goods or services that:

What transaction information or metadata does Stripe display?

Your Stripe Dashboard displays a payment summary for each transaction, including:

  • Payment amount
  • Transaction fee 
  • Net balance
  • Payment date
  • Customer billing information
  • Customer email address, if they were logged in

Stripe doesn't display product details or the customer's name. You can review all available metadata by clicking on a specific payment event in your Stripe Dashboard, then exploring its details. 

Is Stripe secure?

Accepting payments

How does Stripe process payments?

Stripe processes all transactions for you. After you connect a Stripe account, you can accept payments immediately.

Funds are added to your bank account based on the schedule shown in your Stripe dashboard. If you’re based in the United States, a two-day transfer may be possible after your first transfer.

What payment methods can I accept through Stripe?

You can accept these cards through our Stripe integration:

  • Visa (credit and debit cards)
  • MasterCard (credit and debit cards)
  • American Express
  • Discover (US merchants only)

You can also accept Apple Pay from customers checking out on a supported device.

Squarespace is unable to accept:

  • ACH credit transfers and debits
  • Alipay
  • Bancontact
  • Bitcoin
  • Giropay
  • Google Pay
  • iDEAL
  • SEPA Direct Debit
  • SOFORT
  • WeChat Pay

Can I accept PayPal through Stripe?

No, but you can connect a PayPal Business account to let customers check out using PayPal. You can connect both Stripe and PayPal.

How does Stripe transfer money to my account?

Stripe adds funds to your bank account on the fastest payout plan available. You can change your payout schedule for longer than the minimum in your Stripe dashboard. From there, you can also view all transfers from Stripe to your bank account.

Can I set up subscription, installment, or other recurring payments through Stripe?

Yes. If you use Stripe as your payment processor, you can sell subscription products through Squarespace. To learn more, visit Subscription products. You can also enable Afterpay or Clearpay, which is a service customers can use to pay in installments with zero percent interest.

Can customers check out using multiple cards? 

No. It's not possible to split the total between multiple cards at checkout.

Is there a minimum or maximum charge amount?

Yes. Stripe's minimum charge amount varies by currency. In USD, the minimum is $0.50. You can charge up to 1,000,000.00, regardless of currency.

Do purchases using Stripe include discount codes?

Yes. Discounts, taxes, shipping, and all other costs associated with an order can be processed using Stripe.

Transaction fees

What are Stripe's processing fees?

Stripe’s processing fees vary by country. Visit Stripe’s pricing page for details.

What are the Squarespace Commerce transaction fees?

Squarespace charges different Commerce transaction fees depending on your billing plan. For more information, visit Transaction fees and payment processing fees.

Fully refunding an order refunds all Squarespace Commerce transaction fees.

Disputes and fraudulent orders

How does Stripe handle disputes?

To learn how Stripe handles disputes, visit their documentation.

Will Stripe reject fraudulent orders or cards?

Stripe has several monitoring practices in place for catching fraudulent charges and suspicious activity. However, as a merchant using Stripe, you’re responsible for ensuring your customers are who they say they are.

Troubleshooting

I received an email that says I connected a new Stripe account, but I didn’t make that change.

If you received this email and didn’t actually connect a new Stripe account, please contact us so we can look into it for you. In the meantime, for your security, we recommend these steps:

  1. In Payment Settings, disconnect and reconnect your Stripe account. You’ll receive another confirmation email.
  2. Change your Squarespace account password.

Error message: This account already exists

You'll see this error message if you already have a stripe account, or if you started to create a new account without completing Stripe's email verification.

If you already have an account, close the pop-up window, restart the process, and click Already have a Stripe account? in the top-right corner to connect your account.

If you recently created a new account, check your email and complete Stripe's verification process before attempting to connect the account to Squarespace. 

Error message: Something Went Wrong

If you see this error when setting up your Stripe connection, disable any browser extensions and try again. You can also try connecting Stripe from a different supported browser.
