Connecting a print on demand extension

Use a Squarespace Extension for Printful, Spreadconnect, and other options to produce and ship customer merchandise for your brand.

Last updated January 22, 2025

Print on demand providers produce and ship custom, made-to-order products for your store. You can connect your Squarespace store to a print on demand provider through Squarespace Extensions. This is a great option for selling photography, art prints, or branded merchandise, like t-shirts and tote bags.

When you connect to a print on demand provider, customers buy your products on your Squarespace site, and their orders are sent automatically to the third-party provider for production and fulfillment. You pay the costs associated with producing items after you make a sale, so you avoid the overhead costs of maintaining an inventory.

Use this guide as an overview for connecting a print on demand provider to your store.

Step 1 - Create a store page in Squarespace

Every Squarespace store has a store page, which is a browsable collection of products. Before you can sync your print on demand inventory with Squarespace, you need a store page to receive those products.

To create a store page, visit Adding products to your store. Before you can sell products, you also need to Connect a payment processor.

If you’re already selling products in your Squarespace store that you want to sell via a print on demand provider instead, delete those products in Squarespace and recreate them in your print on demand inventory. After you connect the extension, the new products will sync to your Squarespace store.

Tip

Our Printful integration automatically creates a store page during the connection process. Skip this step if you're planning on connecting the Printful extension. To learn more, visit Sell custom merchandise through Printful.

Step 2 - Connect a print on demand extension

Squarespace Extensions has several print on demand providers you can connect to. You can connect multiple extensions to your site and your choice may depend on what you sell:

  • Art of Where - Sell leggings, silk scarves, t-shirts, handbags, notebooks, and more. For a full list of products, visit Art of Where.
  • Printful - Sell custom printed, embroidered, and engraved products. For a full list of products, visit Printful.
  • Printify - Sell custom products on-demand. For a full list of products, visit Printify.
  • Printique - Sell acrylic prints, framed prints, photo puzzles, and more. For a full list of products, visit Printique. Printique is only available in the United States and Canada.
  • Spreadconnect - Sell garments and accessories. For a full list of products, visit Spreadconnect.

We offer a robust integration with Printful through the Custom merch panel, which automates parts of the store setup process. For detailed steps on connecting Printful, visit Sell custom merchandise through Printful.

To connect your store to another print on demand provider:

  1. Open the Extensions panel.
  2. Browse providers by category or search by keyword. Click the provider you want to connect.
  3. Review the provider's details, especially any third-party pricing information.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Click Allow to grant the extension the permissions they need to connect to Squarespace.
  6. Follow the steps on the provider's site to complete the setup.

If you already have products in your print on demand inventory, they'll sync to your Squarespace store after you connect the extension.

Step 3 - Add products to your print on demand store

The next step is to create products via your print on demand provider, then sync the products with your Squarespace store. You may need to refresh Squarespace for products to display in your store after syncing.

To learn more about adding products to your print on demand provider, visit their documentation. This falls outside the scope of Squarespace support.

Pricing and payments

Ensure you price your products to achieve the profit margins you want. When customers buy your products through Squarespace, they pay the listed price, and your print on demand provider charges you for the cost of the materials, printing, and shipping. If you charge more than it costs to create and ship your products, you keep the balance.

Step 3 - Connect a payment processor in Squarespace

If you haven’t already, connect Squarespace Payments or a third-party payment processor like Stripe or PayPal to your store so that you can accept payments from your customers through Squarespace.

Step 4 - Add a billing method in your print on demand account

When customers buy a print on demand product from your Squarespace store, you'll charge your customer the product and shipping price you set in your Squarespace site, then your print on demand provider charges you for the product and shipping costs to fulfill your customer’s order.

As part of the setup process, ensure you add a billing method to your print on demand provider's account so they can charge you the shipping and fulfillment costs for your orders.

Step 5 - Add shipping options in Squarespace

You need to add shipping options in Squarespace even when shipping is handled by a third-party print on demand provider. Research the provider’s fulfillment costs and create flat-rate shipping options in Squarespace to cover those costs. To learn about your print on demand providers costs, visit their documentation.

You can limit the shipping options that display at checkout for print on demand products by creating fulfillment profiles and assigning them to products. This is a good option if your products have different shipping costs from one another.

Step 6 - Set up sales tax rates in Squarespace

You can create tax rules in Squarespace to charge sales tax at checkout based on a customer’s location. If you sell in the United States, you can set up automatic tax rates. If you sell outside the United States, you can manually create tax rates in the areas where you do business.

Edit print on demand products

Make changes to your products through your print on demand provider and sync them with Squarespace. It's not possible to edit print on demand products via Squarespace.

Fulfill print on demand orders

When customers buy a print on demand product from your Squarespace store, the order is sent to the print on demand provider automatically. Depending on your provider’s settings, you may need to manually confirm your orders. Otherwise, the provider automatically fulfills them. Visit your provider’s documentation to learn more.

When your print on demand provider fulfills an order, it’s automatically fulfilled in Squarespace, and you can review it in your Squarespace Orders panel. Customers receive email notifications about their order automatically.

Tip

Create a refund policy and share it with your customers. To learn more, visit Sharing policies and terms on your site.

Fulfillment profiles and print on demand products

Fulfillment profiles apply shipping rates to specific products or groups of products, tailoring the options customers can choose at checkout.

If you plan to sell a mix of print on demand and regular products, consider setting up a fulfillment profile for print on demand products that don't share shipping options with your other products. This way you can:

  • Create shipping rates that apply to your print on demand products, but not your regular products.
  • Generate two separate orders in your Orders panel when customers purchase a mix of print on demand and regular products, which can be fulfilled separately.

After you set up a print on demand-specific fulfillment profile, when customers check out with a print on demand product and a regular product, they'll need to select a shipping option for each part of their order. To learn more, visit Setting up shipping rates.
