If you’ve signed up to use Squarespace Payments as your payment solution, you can connect and verify a bank account after you receive your first payment. Use this guide to understand the different verification options, and how to start that process.

Connect a bank account

You need to connect a bank account to your Squarespace Payments account to receive payouts.

  • For United States accounts, you can only connect a checking account to Squarespace Payments. It's not possible to connect a savings account.
  • If you’re located in Canada, connect your chequing account.
  • If you are located in the United Kingdom, ‌France, or Ireland connect your current account.

Bank account requirements

  • The checking account must be registered under the name listed on your Squarespace Payments account.
    • If you're an individual, your bank account needs to be registered under the account owner's name or DBA (doing business as) name listed on your Stripe account.
    • As a sole proprietor, partnership, or single-member LLC, you must register your bank account under your legal business name, DBA name, or the representative name associated with your Stripe account.
    • For LLCs, corporations, or non-profits, Stripe requires that the bank account be in the company's legal business name or DBA name.
  • The connected bank account must have a sufficient balance upon connecting.
  • If you are located in France or Ireland, you must connect a Euro payout bank account.

To connect a bank account:

  1. Open the Settings panel.
  2. Next to Connect a checking account to receive payouts, click Connect Bank.
  3. Click Continue and follow the prompts.

Accessing this feature

The connection and management of Squarespace Payments requires you to have Site Owner or Administrator permissions.

  • If you didn't use Stripe before creating a Squarespace Payments account, you can connect a checking account after your first sale.
  • If you previously used Stripe and have a good history of processing transactions on your Squarespace website prior to Payments, you can connect a bank account at any time and the payout holding period may not apply.

Note

You're subject to a 14-consecutive-day holding period before you receive your first payout on the 15th day. The holding period begins after a payout checking account is successfully connected. Payouts are initiated Sunday-Thursday only.

Change your connected bank account

You can change the checking account connected to your Squarespace Payments account at any time.

To change the checking account connected to your Squarespace Payments account:

  1. Open the Payments panel.
  2. Under Payments, click Manage settings.
  3. Under Payout Account, click the pencil icon next to your bank.
  4. Follow the prompts to add a different checking account.

Note

When you change your connected checking account, you're subject to a 14-consecutive-day holding period before you receive your first payout on the 15th day. The holding period begins after a payout checking account is successfully connected. Payouts are initiated Sunday-Thursday only.

Authenticate your bank account

Squarespace Payments uses Plaid to authenticate and verify your checking account. Depending on the type of authentication and verification methods your bank supports, there are several different ways this can happen:

  • Select your bank and authenticate using your bank login information.
  • Select your bank and authenticate using your bank login information, account number, and routing number. This method may require you to verify your account using micro-deposits (US only).
  • Link with your account and routing number using micro-deposits (US only).
  • If prompted, select your bank and authenticate by uploading a bank statement from that account. To upload a statement, click Upload Statement.

Note

It's not possible to link a savings account to your Squarespace Payments account.

You need to connect a bank account that belongs to you or your business. If we can't automatically identify you or your business's account ownership, we may request bank statements for additional verification.

Verifying with micro-deposits

Depending on the types of authentication methods your bank supports, you might be required to connect and verify your account using micro-deposits. A micro-deposit is a small sum of money deposited into your checking account, and includes a verification code in the deposit description. Verifying with micro-deposits is available only to merchants in the United States.

Some banks will connect in 1-2 business days without any further action from you. However, in some cases, you may be prompted to enter a verification code from the micro-deposit.

If prompted, to enter the required verification code:

  • Locate the micro-deposit in your bank statement and find the verification code in the description.
  • In the Payments panel, click Enter Code to submit the verification code.

Troubleshooting

  • For help locating your micro-deposit verification code, contact your bank.
  • If you use two-factor authentication with your bank, and run into issues with the authentication process, contact your bank.
  • If you encounter the Plaid error message, "Couldn’t connect to your institution", wait a few hours and then try to connect again. If you continue to have issues, contact Customer Support.
  • Some banks may be incompatible with Plaid. To troubleshoot issues connecting with Plaid, visit Trouble connecting.
