Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving your site's ranking in search results. While the factors search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo use to rank sites are kept secret and change frequently, we build all known SEO best practices into every Squarespace site.
As the host for millions of websites for over a decade, we’ve implemented various strategies to help your site appear in search engine results. Squarespace has the technical side covered for you—there's no need to search for plugins or get under the hood.
Here are some SEO-friendly features built into every Squarespace site:
Squarespace offers free SSL certificates for all Squarespace Domains and third-party domains connected to a site. Google has announced that SSL-secured websites may receive a minor ranking boost.
Clean HTML Markup
Squarespace produces pages with clean HTML markup that is indexable by search engines. There’s no need to add <h1> and <h2> tags in HTML. Just select a Heading style, and those tags are created for you.
Images contain proper <alt> and <title> tags, improving search engine indexing. All meta tags for pages and <link> tags for RSS feeds are automatically generated. Image descriptions are converted to <alt> tags.
All primary pages on your site contain clean URLs that are easily indexed and read.
If you have multiple domains, Squarespace will redirect users and search engines to a primary domain and use rel="canonical" to fix these references. To learn more, visit Multiple domains and SEO.
If you use a custom domain as your primary domain, this prevents your built-in .squarespace.com from appearing in search results.
Search engine and page descriptions
Squarespace includes a field for editing your site’s search engine descriptions. These might appear below your site title in search results depending on the search terms used.
AMP, or, Accelerated Mobile Pages, creates lightweight versions of web pages to help them load faster on a mobile device. AMP works with Google to prioritize results in mobile searches.
Google rich image search for products
Squarespace structures product information so Google can display additional information in rich search results. These search results can include the product name, a product image, description, price range, availability, and product page URL.
Built-in mobile optimization
Google recently updated their technology to give mobile-optimized sites a higher priority. We’ve anticipated the importance of mobile since the original introduction of Squarespace 6 back in 2012, where we mandated that all templates have a unique style on mobile devices. We’ve scanned all Squarespace 7 templates using Google’s Mobile-Friendly Testing Tool and can say that all our templates passed the test with flying colors.
Today, mobile-friendly sites are search-engine friendly sites. As long as you don’t disable your mobile style or overload your site with too much content, your site is ready to be found in mobile searches.
Google Search Keywords Analytics
After verifying your site with Google Search Console using our streamlined process, you can check the Google Search Keywords panel to see which search terms drive traffic to your site from Google. Understanding which search keywords result in the most clicks to your site can help you focus your content and continue to improve your search strategies.
