Using Archive Blocks

Archive Blocks create organized lists of links to blog posts, gallery images, products, and events. You can display content by tags, categories, author, and date.

These blocks encourage visitors to find content that interests them. You can use Archive Blocks to create a text-only index or add navigation to sidebars, footers, and other areas. The lists update automatically when you add, edit, or delete content. 

Archive Block lists are text-only. To create visual displays of existing content, use Summary Blocks.

Note: Archive Blocks replace Tag List, Author List, Category List, and Month List Blocks. If your site uses these blocks, they'll continue working but it won't be possible to add new blocks.
Note: Archive Blocks can display up to 50 groups (a Month, Year, Author, Category, or Tag) with a maximum of 100 items per group. 

Step 1 - Add the Archive Block

  1. Open a page or post editor.
  2. Click an Insert Point or the +.
  3. Select Archive from the menu.
  4. For more detailed steps, visit Adding blocks.

Step 2 - Select your content

In the Archive Block editor, select the Blog, Gallery, Project, Events, or Products Page to feature in the block. In this example, we'll use a Blog Page, but you can use any type of collection page except Album Pages.

Note: The Archive Block can only display content from one page. However, you can add multiple blocks to feature all of the content you want.

Step 3 - Select a layout

Click the Display tab to select Index, List, or Dropdown from the Layout drop-down menu. The preview of the block on your page will change so you can view the changes in real time. We recommend playing around with the settings until you find a layout you like.

Index layout

Index displays a list of items with the Group By criteria as headers. You can display an Index as one column or check Break into Multiple Columns. The Index layout can:

  • Sort by ascending dates.
  • Show the dates items were published.
  • Show the number of items in each group (group count).


List layout

List displays the Group By criteria in a list. The List layout doesn't display individual items. The List layout can:

  • Sort dates by ascending (when grouped by month or year).
  • Break the list into multiple columns.
  • Show the number of items in each group (group count).


Dropdown layout

Dropdown displays the Group By criteria list in a drop-down menu. You can:

  • Sort dates by ascending (when grouped by month or year).
  • Enter a new drop-down title.
  • Show the number of items in each group (group count).



Choosing the right layout

Use this table for help deciding which layout option is best for you.

To create a design that: Select this layout: Then choose from additional style options:
  • Lists individual items
  • Uses the Group By criteria as headers for each section
  • Break lines into multiple columns
  • Show the publish dates for items
  • Show the number of items in each group
  • Lists the Group By criteria
  • Doesn't list individual items
  • Break list into multiple columns
  • Show the number of items in each group
  • Creates a drop-down menu of Group By criteria
  • Doesn't display individual items
  • Enter a new title to display in the drop-down menu
  • Show the number of items in each group 

Step 4 - Select text alignment

If you're using the Index or List layout, you can select Left, Center, or Right to change the text alignment.

Step 5 - Select a "group by" criteria

Select Month, Year, Author, Category, or Tag from the Group By drop-down menu to organize content by specific criteria. For example, selecting Category will create navigation in the block by category as shown in the examples above.

Note: Each Archive Block supports one Group By criteria. To divide content in multiple ways, add multiple Archive Blocks. For example, you can add one Archive Block that lists content by tag and one Archive Block that lists content by month.

Step 6 - Select a "sort by" order

Month and year

When grouping by month or year, items appear in descending order by default. Check Sort Dates Ascending to reverse the order.


When grouping by author, select First Name, Last Name, Count, or Activity from the Sort By drop-down menu. 

Author names are pulled from the Bio tab in contributor profiles. To change how your name displays, visit Editing contributor profiles.

  • First Name - Alphabetical order by first name
  • Last Name - Alphabetical order by last name
  • Count - Items per author in descending order
  • Activity - Most recently published item by author

Categories and tags

When grouping by categories or tags, select Name, Count, or Activity from the Sort By drop-down menu.

  • Name - Category alphabetical order
  • Count - Frequency of item in descending order
  • Activity - Most recently published item with the tag or category
