Image clickthrough URLs

Turn your images into links to other pages or websites.

Last updated January 3, 2024

Use clickthrough URLs to turn images into links to other web sites, pages on your site, email addresses, phone numbers, or files.

Image blocks, gallery sections, and gallery blocks support clickthrough URLs on any Squarespace site. Some templates in version 7.0 support clickthrough URLs in gallery pages.

There are a number of uses for clickthrough URLs. For example:

  • Display a preview of a document using an image block and add a clickthrough URL that opens the .pdf file of the document.
  • Create a gallery of a fashion collection and add clickthrough URLs to specific products.

Note

Clickthrough URLs aren't supported on cover pages or in auto layouts.

Add an image

To create a clickthrough URL, first add images to your site:

  • Add an image block to a layout page. This adds a single image to a page.
  • Add a gallery section to a page. This adds a section where you can upload multiple images in a variety of layouts.
  • Add a gallery block to a blog post or event description. This adds a block where you can upload multiple images in a variety of layouts. In version 7.0, you can add gallery blocks to layout pages and connect them with existing gallery pages.

Lightboxes

Lightbox is a design effect that opens images in an overlay and dims the rest of the page when visitors click the image. Clickthrough URLs work with lightbox-enabled images, depending on where you add the image to your site. In image blocks, gallery sections, and grid gallery blocks, you can choose to have clickthrough URLs open on the same page or in a new tab.

  • In grid gallery blocks, click the Design tab, scroll down, and check Open Links in New Window to have clickthrough URLs open in new tabs. This option applies to all images in the block.
