Sold out products

Customize or hide products that run out of inventory.

Last updated February 4, 2025

When a product is out of stock, customers can't add it to their carts, and a Sold Out label will display on store pages and product details pages. You can also enable product waitlists so shoppers can sign up to be notified when items are back in stock. If you sell one-of-a-kind products or services, or if "Sold Out" doesn't work for your business, you can change the text.

To get mobile notifications when products are low or out of stock, download the Squarespace app for iOS and Android.

Tip

Enable limited availability labels to let shoppers know when products are low in stock.

How products become sold out

Products will be automatically marked as sold out after the last item in stock is bought. You can also set a product as sold out by manually changing the stock level to 0.

Replenish your stock

When you have more items in stock, edit your stock level to reflect your current inventory.

Mark a product as sold out

To mark a product as sold out, set its stock level at 0.

  1. Open the Products & Services panel and click Products.
  2. Hover over the product you want to label as sold out.
  3. Under Stock, click the quantity and enter 0.
  4. If the product has variants, click the arrow icon to show them. In the Stock field, enter 0.
  1. Tap Products.
  2. Tap the product you want to flag as out of stock.
  3. Tap Quantity or Stock.
  4. Replace the current number with 0.
  5. Tap Done.

Customize the label

Text

You can replace the "Sold Out" text in the Product Status panel:

  1. Open the Product Status panel.
  2. Click Out of Stock.
  3. Click the text field to edit it.
  4. Enter your custom text and click Save. For example, you can change the label to "Sold" or "Class Full."

Color

The sold out label follows different color tweaks depending on where it is:

  • Store pages - The label follows Products > Status
  • Product details pages - The label follows Product details page > Description
  • Product blocks - In version 7.1, the label always displays white text over a black background. In version 7.0, the label follows your site's Product: Status badges style tweaks.

Placement

In version 7.1, the sold out label placement on store pages depends on the text alignment.

  • Middle - When text is middle-aligned, the sold out label displays beneath the price.
  • Left or right - When the text is aligned to one side, the label displays on the opposite side.

On product details pages, the label always displays beneath the price. On product blocks, the label always displays to the right.

Variants

How variants show they've sold out depends on their display setting:

  • Buttons - the specific variant's button appears dimmed
  • Drop-down menu - the variant option in the menu shows a "(Sold out)" label

To stop displaying the (Sold out) label next to variants in dropdown menus:

  1. Open the Product Status panel, then click Out of Stock.
  2. Switch the Show in variant dropdown toggle off.
  3. Click Save.

If you have multiple product options, your site will check for sold out variant combinations as a customer selects variants. Variants will appear sold out after the customer selects other variants that would make for a sold out combination. Variants won't appear sold out when product waitlists are enabled. Enable product waitlists

Squarespace doesn't currently have a back-order system, but you can enable product waitlists to notify interested shoppers when sold out items are back in stock.

Can I hide sold out products?

You can hide a sold out product. However, displaying sold out products is a great way to advertise what you sell. Even if your products aren't available, sold out labels communicate that your products are in demand. To move sold out products to the bottom of your store page, reorder them

Sold out labels aren't displaying

If the label doesn't display and you have a version 7.0 advanced store page, it may be hidden in site styles. To show the labels, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Site styles panel.
  2. Find the Products: Status Badges tweak, and ensure Style isn't set to None.
