Hiding pages from search engine results

Adding a "noindex" tag to a page hides it from search engines, while leaving it public and available for visitors to access.

There are two options for adding a noindex tag:

  • Page Settings - Check Hide this page from search results in the SEO tab of Page Settings.
  • Code Injection - Add the code manually with Code Injection.
Tip: To see all options for hiding content on your site, visit Controlling who can see your site's pages.

Page Settings vs. Code Injection

Adding a noindex tag in Page Settings or through Code Injection creates a similar effect. In most cases, you can use the Page Settings option.

With either method:

  • Adding the tag to a collection page also hides its collection items.
  • You can't hide individual collection items.
  • Adding the tag to an Index Page doesn't hide its sub-pages. To hide all pages, add the tag to the main Index and each sub-page.
  • Adding the tag doesn't hide pages from site search, only external search engines.

The differences are listed in the table below.

Page Settings

Code Injection

  • Available on all plans
  • Built-in option, no code knowledge required
  • Page-specific (no site-wide option)
  • Removes the page from the site map
  • Not available for homepages
  • Not available on the Personal plan
  • Requires adding code manually
  • Can be used to hide the entire site
  • Page or site stays in the site map
  • Available for homepages
Tip: You can hide the entire site with your site's visibility settings.

Enable the tag in Page Settings

To enable the noindex tag for any page (except homepages and collection items):

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over the page and click the gear-icon.
  3. Click the SEO tab.
  4. Under Hide from Search Engines, check All pages in this collection. Blog Pages have more options.

Add the tag with Code Injection

Code Injection is a Premium feature available in Business and Commerce plans.

You can add a noindex tag manually to Code Injection with the following code snippet:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex">

The Code Injection area you use sets what content is hidden:

  • Hide your entire site - Add the code snippet to Header Code Injection.
  • Hide specific pages - Add the code snippet to the Page Header Code Injection in Page Settings. Adding this to a collection page (like a Blog Page) also hides its collection items (like blog posts).
Tip: If you downgrade to a plan that doesn't support Premium features, Code Injection is automatically disabled.
Adding or modifying code on your site is an advanced modification. While we can't offer more help on this topic, there are many resources available that can point you in the right direction:
