You can change the language you and visitors see in Squarespace.
There are two language settings you can control separately:
- Account language - Change the settings that help you navigate Squarespace and edit your site.
- Site language - Change the built-in text visitors see, like dates, form field labels, and navigation controls.
Use this guide to learn how to edit these settings and which areas will translate.
We currently support six languages:
Change your account language
The account language is what you see when you log in and edit your site, like the words in the Home Menu and panels. You can choose your account language in the Account Dashboard.
To open your account language settings, click this link. Or, follow these steps:
- Open your Account Dashboard.
- Hover over your initials or profile picture in the top-right corner and select Language.
- Select a language.
- Close the profile to save your changes.
- You’ll now see your preferred account language on all sites you manage.
Keep in mind:
- The language is specific to each account. If your site has multiple contributors, everyone can choose which language they see independently. You can only change the language for your own account, even if you're an Administrator for a site with other contributors.
- If you have multiple sites, the account language setting applies to all of them.
- Changing your account language doesn’t affect the language visitors see.
Change your site language
Your site language is the built-in text that visitors see. Change your site’s language in Language and Region Settings.
To change your site’s language:
- In the Home Menu, click Settings, then click Language & Region.
- Under the map, click the Language drop-down menu.
- Select a language.
- Depending when your site was created, you may also see a Localize website toggle. If you do, switch it on.
- Click Save at the top of the panel.
- You’ll see all built-in text on your site in the language you selected.
Keep in mind:
- Changing your site language only changes built-in text. This setting doesn’t translate text you add yourself, like Text Blocks, page/post titles, categories, or tags.
- Your selected site language is in your site's header code, even if you're not using a supported language or template. Services like search engines and accessibility software use this tag to identify your site's language.

Changing your site language depends on your site's version.
All version 7.1 sites support changing your site language.
Only these templates support changing your site language:
- All Bedford family templates
- All Brine family templates
- All York family templates
- Julia, Kent, and Om in the Montauk template family
- Charlotte, Naomi, and Pacific in the Pacific template family
If you're using an unsupported template, you can switch to a supported template at any time.
To switch from a supported template to an unsupported template, first change your site language to English. If you switch to a template that doesn’t support another language, all built-in text will revert to English.
Areas that translate when you change your site language
Changing your site language will translate most of the built-in text on your site, but some areas will stay in English. When you change your site language:
These areas will translate
- Block text, like First Name and Submit on Form Blocks
- Built-in Commerce text, like the Order Confirmed message, checkout page, and notification emails
- Collection navigation features, like Comments and Previous/Next links in blog posts
- Dates and times
- Confirmation emails for Squarespace Email Campaigns
- The client scheduling page in Squarespace Scheduling
- Placeholder text, like search in the Search Block
These areas won’t translate
- Address fields in Form Blocks are always formatted for United States addresses.
- Calendars, like Events Pages and Calendar Blocks, use a Sunday-Saturday structure.
- Cover Page demo content is in English.
- Date fields in Form Blocks are always formatted for the US (MM-DD-YYYY). Use a text field instead to let visitors enter the date in their local format.
- Text from most third-party integrations is in English.
We have separate template stores for each supported language, so you can start a trial and pick a template in your language:
Will changing the site language change text I’ve added?
No. Only the text that’s built into a site, like Form Block field titles and Blog Page navigation, will translate automatically. Text you can add and edit yourself, like page titles and Text Block text, remain in the language you enter.
Can I choose a site language that’s different than my account language?
Yes. For example, if you want to use Squarespace editing features in English, but you’re building a Spanish site, you can select English as your account language (in the Account Dashboard) and Spanish as the site language (in Language and Region Settings).
My site language didn’t change after selecting a new language.
If the language on your site didn’t change after editing it in Language and Region Settings, you’re probably using a site that only supports English, or using a language that's not supported. Only some sites can appear in non-English languages.
Are mobile apps available in my language?
Squarespace mobile apps are currently only available in English.
Can I change the language of the Home Menu news alerts?
No. The news alerts that appear over your profile picture in the Home Menu are only available in English.
Is there a difference between the multiple options for a single language in Language and Region Settings?
There aren’t noticeable differences between the options. However, choosing a specific country helps us consider more localized features in the future.
