Nameserver registration (glue records)

Host your domain on your own servers.

Last updated December 7, 2024

To host your domain on your own servers instead of Squarespace’s nameservers, you can use Nameserver Registration, or glue records. Glue records register your nameserver’s IP address with your TLD’s registry. For example, if your server is hosted on a different platform, like Cloudflare, you can add glue records to your domain settings in Squarespace to ensure your registry has the most up-to-date information regarding where you’re hosting your domain.

Note

Creating and managing a custom server falls outside of Squarespace’s scope of support. Adding glue records to your domain settings is an advanced step. Only add glue records if:

  • You already have a server.
  • You have server administration knowledge or experience.
  • You want your domain to be hosted on a server that’s not managed by your domain provider.

Add glue records

To add glue records:

  1. Have your server’s hostname and IP address ready. You may need to contact your server provider for this information.
  2. Open your domains dashboard.
  3. Click the domain you're editing. Click DNS, then click Nameserver Registration.
  4. Click Add Host Record. In the Create a host record pop-up window, enter the hostname in the Hostname field.
  5. In the IP address field, enter the IP address, and click Add IP address.
  6. Click Save. It can take 24 to 72 hours for the changes to update.

After adding your glue record, follow these steps to add your custom nameservers to your domain.

Remove glue records

It’s not possible to delete glue records if they’re currently in use. Ensure your nameservers are pointing to another destination before deleting glue records. Removing glue records can make a website or application unavailable for up to 72 hours.

To remove glue records:

  1. Have your server’s hostname and IP address ready. You may need to contact your server provider for this information.
  2. Open your domains dashboard.
  3. Click the domain you're editing. Click DNS, then click Domain Nameservers.
  4. Click Nameserver Registration, then click the trash can icon next to the host record.
  5. Click Save. It can take 24 to 72 hours for the changes to update.
