Abandoned Checkout Recovery

With Abandoned Checkout Recovery, you can automatically send reminders to customers who add products to their cart and leave without completing an order. The email is automatically sent 24 hours after a checkout is abandoned so you can stay in touch while your store is still fresh in shoppers’ minds.

This guide explains how to customize your Abandoned Checkout Email and how we identify checkouts as abandoned. After setting up the email, you can track abandonments and recovered revenue in Analytics.

Note: Abandoned Checkout Recovery is available in the Advanced plan.

How Abandoned Checkout Recovery works in Squarespace

  • An email is sent 24 hours after a checkout is abandoned.
  • You can customize the email’s subject, message, header, and footer to match your brand.
  • The email includes a Complete Your Order button that links to a Review Cart page.
  • The email is disabled by default, so we’ll never send your customers unwanted emails without your permission. Customers can opt out from future Abandoned Checkout emails.

A customer will receive an Abandoned Checkout notification if:

  • They enter an email address at checkout.
  • Then they close the checkout page without completing the purchase.
  • And at least one product in the cart is in stock.
Note: If a customer closes the checkout page and then returns to complete their purchase in the same browser before the email is sent, we won’t send the email.

Additional information

  • No other information (like name or credit card) is required or stored. If an abandoned customer returns to their shopping cart, they’ll re-enter this information.

Step 1 - Enable the feature in Checkout settings

  1. In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Checkout.
  2. Check Enable Abandoned Checkout Emails.
  3. Click Save.

Step 2 - Review and customize the email content

  • In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Notifications.
  • In the Notifications panel, select Abandoned Checkout.


The Abandoned Checkout panel will open, where you can preview and customize most of its default content:

  • Subject Line - The default subject line includes your site title (set by the %s variable). You can delete or move this and add custom text. For example, the default subject is “YOUR SITE TITLE | Your cart is waiting for you,” but you can change it to “Come back to YOUR SITE TITLE!” or “Did you forget something?”
  • Title - Use a combination of custom text and the %s variable (your site title). For example, the default title is “Your cart is waiting for you,” but you can change it to something like “Your cart misses you” or “These products are selling out soon.”
  • Message - Use text, HTML, and JSON variables to customize the body of the email. This is a great place to manually add discount codes if you want to add them to this email.

The email includes this standard information:

  • Summary of items in the customer’s cart - Automatic information about the customer’s saved items, including product names and thumbnail images for a visual reminder.
  • Complete Your Order button - Leads to the Review Cart page with the customer’s items.
  • Your primary domain
  • An opt-out message and link

As you make changes, a preview of a live email populates to the right. Here's an example of a customized email:

When you're finished, click Save. The email is now enabled.

Tip: Customize the standard header and footer in all Commerce notifications.

Step 3 - Send a test email

To see how a the Abandoned Checkout email appears in a real email inbox, send yourself a test email by clicking Send Test Email To Youremail@email.com.

Step 4 - Track results with Analytics

In Abandoned Cart Analytics, you can track cart abandonment trends and measure the success of your Abandoned Checkout emails. This panel includes a funnel that shows the typical path customers take from abandonment to purchase.

Allow customers to opt out

Customers can unsubscribe from Abandoned Checkout emails by clicking Opt out at the bottom of the email. This link and text can’t be removed or customized.

Restore the default email content

To undo the customizations to the email, scroll down in the panel and click Restore Defaults. This restores the email’s original content. Use caution, as this process can't be reversed.

Disable the email

To stop sending Abandoned Checkout emails, you can disable them at any time by returning to Checkout Settings:

  1. In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Checkout.
  2. Uncheck Enable Abandoned Checkout emails.
  3. Click Save.
