Bing Webmaster Tools is a free service that helps you manage your site's presence in Bing search results. To start using Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing will ask you to verify your site with their services.
Before you begin
- Remove your site-wide password or page password on your homepage if either are enabled. Passwords prevent Bing from indexing your content.
- If you have a third-party domain, ensure it's connected properly. For best results, we recommend waiting 72 hours after you connect your domain before verifying it with Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Verification with Bing Webmaster Tools won't work on trial sites because trial sites are hidden from search engines. If your site is in trial, publish your site before continuing.
Step 1 - Set a primary domain
Ensure the domain you're verifying is set as your the Primary domain in Domains Settings. Your Primary domain will have a (Primary Domain) label next to it. If you only have one domain listed for your account, you can skip this step.
To learn more, visit Setting a primary domain.
Step 2 - Add your Domain to Bing Webmaster Tools
Log into Bing Webmaster Tools. Enter your domain to the Add a Site box, and click Add.
Step 3 - Verify your site
There are multiple ways to verify your site with Bing Webmaster Tools. The option to use depends on if your site supports Code Injection, a Premium feature.
- <meta> tag option - Use this if you're on a plan that supports Code Injection (Website Business, Commerce plans, legacy Personal plans).
- CNAME option - Use this if you're on the current Personal plan.
Option 1 - Copy the <meta> tag
After adding your domain, a page opens with three options for verifying your domain. If your plan supports Code Injection, choose Option 2: Copy and paste a <meta> tag in your default webpage.
- Copy the HTML code in the shaded box.
- In another tab, log into your Squarespace site.
- In the Home Menu, click Settings, click Advanced, then click Code Injection.
- Paste the HTML tag in the Header box.
- Click Save.
- Return to Bing Webmaster Tools and click Verify.
If successful, you'll be brought to the Bing Webmaster Tools dashboard.
Option 2 - Add a CNAME
After adding your domain, a page opens with three options for verifying your domain. If your plan doesn't support Code Injection, choose Option 3: Add a CNAME record to DNS.
Note: The following steps show how to add a CNAME to a Squarespace Domain. If your domain is hosted by another provider, contact your provider for help.
- Copy the full CNAME record in italics.
- In another tab, log into your Squarespace site.
- In the Home Menu, click Settings, then click Domains.
- Click the domain name you want to verify.
- Click Advanced Settings.
- Select CNAME from the drop-down menu in the bottom row of the Custom Records section.
- In the Host column, paste the full CNAME record.
