Enable SEPA as a payment method for your customers.

The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is a project by the European Union to make payments easier within and between member countries. Any bank account in euros within SEPA can be directly debited.

SEPA payments eligibility

To enable SEPA payments for your customers, you need an active Squarespace Payments account.

SEPA payments availability and limits

• SEPA is available to sellers in many countries as long as your store is presenting in euros.
• SEPA Direct Debit transactions have a limit of €10,000 each. 
• Your customers can't purchase subscription products with SEPA payments. 

Enable SEPA payments

To enable SEPA payments for your Squarespace Payments account:

1. Open the Payments Settings panel.
2. Under Manage Squarespace Payments, click Manage Settings.
3. Under Manage Squarespace Payments, click the Payment methods tab.
4. Under Bank debits and redirects, switch the toggle next to SEPA Direct Debit to enable it.

How customers pay with SEPA

With SEPA, customers are redirected to their online banking environment. There, they authenticate the payment by providing their full name and IBAN, and then authorizing the mandate. The customer receives immediate notification regarding the success or failure of the payment.

Note: The SEPA Direct Debit rulebook requires that you notify your customer each time you debit their account. For this case, by default, Squarespace automatically sends an Order Initiation email to your customer.

SEPA payment processing fees

There's a €0.35 processing fee for using SEPA payments. Fees associated with using card payments won't apply. Learn more about Squarespace Payments fees and other transaction fees.

SEPA transactions and refunds timing

SEPA payments can be refunded up to 180 days after the original payment, and typically take 3-4 days to process. You can check the status of a SEPA payment in the Orders panel. You can also click on a transaction to see the Order Summary, which shows if the order was paid with SEPA direct debit.

SEPA disputes

There’s an eight-week window for disputes, and they cannot be contested. Disputes ‌are automatically resolved in the customer's favor, and the disputed amount and fees are debited from your Squarespace Payments account balance. After eight weeks but up to 13 months, a customer can dispute a payment only if the debit is considered unauthorized. The customer’s financial institution will review documentation provided by the payment processor and make a final decision.
