Steps to troubleshoot errors uploading images or display issues after uploading

When you upload an image to your site, it may not appear as expected depending on its format. It's important to follow our formatting guidelines to minimize upload errors or display issues.

Use this guide for help resolving errors during the upload process or after an image has been added to your site.

Errors during upload

If an error appears when you try to upload an image, review our image requirements and ensure your image follows them. If you’re using the correct file type and your image is 20 MB or less, the issue might be your image’s resolution. Image resolution is measured in megapixels and our limit is 120 MP. Upload the image again after it meets our requirements.

If your image file follows all our requirements but an error still appears during upload, the issue could be related to your browser. Follow our browser troubleshooting steps and try again.

Blurry images

If an image appears blurry or pixellated, it's likely because it's scaling up to fit the content width. This usually happens because the image is too narrow, so we recommend using images wider than 1500px in most areas of Squarespace. However, some content areas have different requirements:

• Browser icons (or favicons)
• Images in email campaigns
• Site logos in version 7.0

Resize the image to meet our requirements, then upload it again.

Color distortion

If an image's color is distorted, your image’s color mode or color profile might not be formatted correctly.

Review our image requirements, then update the image's color settings if necessary. After it meets our requirements, upload it again.

Banner images cropped on mobile devices

Banner images almost always crop on mobile devices because a banner is wide and mobile devices have a narrow width. If you notice cropping on mobile devices:

• Review how banners and section background images appear on mobile devices.
• Learn how to customize your banners to mitigate cropping issues.

You may need to edit the image outside of Squarespace and upload it again to get the effect you want.

Resolution of image changes at different sizes

When you resize an image on your site, our image processor resamples the image instead of directly resizing the image, which retains the same pixel dimensions. This means that as the image container size changes, pixels can get blended, which may result in images losing some sharpness.

Uploading images that follow our requirements and best practices will ensure that your images render with acceptable clarity at any size, but small discrepancies are expected.

If your images meet our requirements but still appear distorted or unexpectedly cropped, you can:

• Make style changes to the block, section, or page where you added images.
• Use focal points to center images.
• Use our built-in image editor to make changes like cropping and changing the aspect ratio.
